你知道河龟的壳是随着它长大吗？龟壳上有一层盾片，而一层面积较大的新盾片会长在最上层的盾片底下。长完后，旧盾片会被蜕掉、被新的盾片取代。这不只让龟壳长得更大，同时还能消除旧盾片上的藻类和感染，避免腐甲病！

每当河龟的盾片被蜕掉，新的盾片上会有多出一环。因此，河龟像树一样，可以用它壳上的环估计它的年龄。

Did you know that a turtle’s shell grows along with it? Scutes are the plates on a turtle’s shell. As a turtle grows, a layer of new, larger scutes grows beneath the uppermost layer of scutes. Eventually, the old scutes are shed, replaced by the new layer beneath. Not only does this allow the shell to grow larger, it also gets rid of infection and algae on the old scutes, preventing shell rot!

Every time a turtle sheds, the new scutes have an additional ring. As a result, the rings on a turtle’s shell can be used to estimate its age, much like a tree.
