#DYK that the Malayan tiger is the apex predator in the Peninsular Malaysia forest? This means tigers play a key ecological role in ensuring balance in the ecosystem, such as regulating the herbivore population.
It is also known as an umbrella species because it requires a large habitat to survive. This means that when there is a healthy tiger population, a wide range of habitats inhabited by various species of wildlife are also healthy. In short, protecting the Malayan tiger and its habitat indirectly protects many other species that are part of its ecosystem. This includes species such as the leopard, gaur, sambar deer and many more.
Our tigers are crucial to healthy forests, which provide us with clean air, fresh water, climate change mitigation, and much more. So by saving our tigers, we would also be saving many wild lives, as well as safeguarding our future.
