In The Soidog20years Timeline, Were Now Up To 2011..

In the #SoiDog20Years timeline, we’re now up to 2011 🧡

A mere eight years prior, Soi Dog had set out to reduce the stray animal population through a humane and sustainable large-scale spay/neuter programme (known as CNVR – Catch, Neuter, Vaccinate, Return). In less than ten years, this had snowballed into a mission on several fronts to end the suffering of homeless animals in Asia.

In addition to the rescue, treatment, sheltering, CNVR and ending the dog meat trade programmes, Soi Dog embarked on its largest coordinated emergency rescue operation to date by responding to dogs affected by the catastrophic and widely documented Bangkok floods of 2011.

Thailand witnesses monsoon flooding in different provinces every year, but this was on a whole different level. The effects were so widespread that 65 of Thailand’s 77 provinces were declared flood disaster zones. Hundreds of people died and millions were affected.

The impact on stray animals was huge. Soi Dog ferried hundreds of dogs to safety by boat, and the epicentre of the operation took place at Phuttamonthon in Nakhon Pathom province in the west of Greater Bangkok.

This would become the first of many subsequent emergency response situations that supporters of Soi Dog made possible.

Internationally, Gill and John’s work began to become more widely recognised. In June, Gill was named the Asia Pacific region’s Canine Hero at the Animals for Asia conference in China, and later the couple were awarded the Jeanne Marchig Animal Welfare Award 2011 for their good work with Soi Dog Foundation.

According to founder and chairman of the Trustees, Jeanne Marchig, the award was presented to the couple “in acknowledgement of their tireless work to protect animals from abuse. Under their voluntary and tireless direction, Soi Dog Foundation has become one of the most effective and compassionate animal welfare groups in the Asian region. Gill and John are on the front line of the fight to end animal suffering and abuse in Thailand and are worthy recipients of this award”.
