WWF-Malaysia is thrilled to share the success of our recent knowledge exchange trip to the Sugud Island Marine Conservation Area (SIMCA) on 21-23 June 2023, in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia Jabatan PERHILITAN Semenanjung Malaysia

Organised by WWF-Malaysia with the support of Reef Guardian and Sabah Wildlife Department, participants set out on this trip to enhance their understanding of the path towards being IUCN Green Listed. The trip also aimed to advance the uptake of the IUCN Green List in protected areas within Peninsular Malaysia.

SIMCA, a site renowned for its astounding natural value, holds the prestigious title of being the first IUCN Green List site in Malaysia. By witnessing SIMCA’s journey towards Green List recognition, the participants gained tremendous insights into the application and evaluation processes based on a Green List applicant’s perspective. Moreover, the trip offered a platform for immersive discussions on the feasibility of Green List implementation in selected sites across Peninsular Malaysia.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Dr Archier Chung and her exceptional team from Reef Guardian for their invaluable contributions and support during the trip. WWF-Malaysia is hopeful to replicate this conservation success and milestone in Peninsular Malaysia’s protected areas.
