Sometimes when a dog is very old, sickly and frial, some owners will decide to put it to sleep. It is their prerogative to do so. However, it must be done with love and compassion. A couple of days ago, a pet taxi operator contacted us and asked us if we could take in a 16-year-old dog. After hearing her story, we agreed. Apparently, the owner was away and her parents had sent the dog to PAWS to be euthanised. The dog has been with them for 16 years and instead of taking it to the vet and comforting it while it was being euthanised – they sent it to a pound to be killed. Imagine the fear and confusion the poor old dog must have felt in a strange place with strange people with hundreds of noisy dogs. The owner had sought the help of the pet taxi operator to remove the dog, without her parent’s knowledge, and send ot to us. When the pet taxi person called PAWS to pick the dog up – she found that it was already euthanised. I don’t understand the cruelty of the parents – who must be senior citizens – as well as the fear a grown adult had for her parents.

I recall how her friend had to put down her old dog suffering from skin cancer. It was done in Gasing and her entire family and her husband’s family as well as friends had turned up at the clinic. They spent more than an hour sitting outside with the dog – feeding it and pampering it. And when the time came, my friend and her husband went inside with the dog and held it in their arms throughout the procedure. That is how a loyal pet’s like should end if intervention was required.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

MDDB's main activities revolve around rescuing dogs from the local council pounds as well as off the streets. Once they have been rescued, the dogs are vaccinated and neutered before being put up for adoption.
