Continued… The immediate aftermath of the 2004 tsunami was chaotic. The sheer scale of destruction, the loss of life both human and animal, the overwhelming size and traumatic nature of the clear-up and relief effort became apparent.
After spending the first three days after the tsunami helping with the human crisis, Soi Dog – with Gill in her wheelchair initially – began a huge operation across the region to feed and treat the many abandoned and displaced dogs, thousands of whom had also had their homes and food sources washed away.
If something good can come out of such a terrible disaster, it was that it put Soi Dog on the map, and for months after the tsunami, the young foundation was inundated with offers of help from vets and other volunteers and were able to run multiple clinics.
Soi Dog moved into 2005, and the rescue effort continued. In addition, WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals), whose fundraising efforts following the disaster had been very successful, were now looking for partners. They provided Soi Dog with a two-year grant enabling the employment of full-time vets and rescue officers for the first time.
Gill received her first set of prosthetics and taught herself to walk again, and the wheelchair was consigned to the attic.
In late 2005, Soi Dog became the first organisation of its kind to be granted foundation status in Thailand, and a principally Thai board was established. The scale of the CNVR programme was increasing, so a building was rented in Phuket Town in which to carry out procedures and provide shelter to homeless dogs, but with numbers quickly increasing, it became apparent that larger premises would soon be needed.
Subsequently, Soi Dog took on the running of the government-operated dog pound and, in return for carrying out improvements of the facility and the dogs it already housed, Soi Dog was granted the use of extra space that was needed as more animals were being rescued. #SoiDog20Years 🧡
