PETALING JAYA: One of the biggest challenges faced by dog rescuers is the excessive number of puppies born almost daily on the streets.

“There are dozens and dozens of puppies that are being rescued but very few adopters coming forward to take them home,” said canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) coordinator Brenda Chia.

She added that when MDDB first started having adoption drives 15 years ago, almost all the puppies rescued would find homes.

“It is not like that any more,” said Chia, adding that MDDB was desperately trying to re-home about 15 puppies at the moment.

The puppies will all be at the Ikano Shopping Centre on Saturday (May 27) and Sunday (May 28).

The event outside the Absolute Thai restaurant will be held between 11am and 8pm.

According to Chia, there will be four five-month-old puppies that have been neutered, vaccinated twice and even given rabies inoculation seeking homes at the adoption drive.

“The rescuer wanted to make the puppies as adoptable as possible and hence neutered, vaccinated and inoculated them,” said Chia.

She said those adopting these five puppies will be spared from the expenses incurred to spay and vaccinate them.

“They will just have to administer the third shot followed by the yearly booster beginning next year,” she added.

The adoption drive will also feature MDDB’s sponsorship programme whereby members of the public can pick a dog to sponsor at a monthly contribution of RM100.

MDDB merchandise, including the organisation’s very own dog shampoo, will also be sold at the event.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

MDDB's main activities revolve around rescuing dogs from the local council pounds as well as off the streets. Once they have been rescued, the dogs are vaccinated and neutered before being put up for adoption.
