This week, we start at the very beginning. #SoiDog20Years 🧡
The year is 2003. Gill and John Dalley have taken early retirement and relocated to Phuket in southern Thailand. They planned to relax and play golf, perhaps join the expatriate social scene and enjoy their well-earned retirement.
Although this was their initial plan, things changed rapidly when they decided they could no longer stand by and watch as the stray animal population on the island spiralled out of control and homeless animals were suffering.
As they set about investigating what was already being done to help the street dogs and cats, they met Margot Homburg, a Dutch expatriate who had recently moved to Phuket from Bangkok. She had been neutering dogs in her local neighbourhood in Bangkok by taking them to a local vet, and she had set up a small charity called Soi Dog Foundation.
Gill, John and Margot joined forces, agreeing that the best long-term solution to the street dog and cat problem in Phuket was a mass spay/neuter programme as it would significantly reduce the number of animals being born on the streets only to suffer a life of misery.
Together, they began setting up spay/neuter clinics throughout the island. Gill, John and Margot became the dog catchers and vet nurses, while the neutering operations themselves were carried out by volunteer vets from overseas.
Suddenly, early retirement had turned into a full-scale animal welfare mission! In the first three months, their small operation had neutered almost 200 animals. And so Soi Dog’s CNVR programme and mission to end the suffering of stray animals had begun.
