Introducing Malaysia's Largest Tortoise, The Asian..

Introducing Malaysia’s largest tortoise, the Asian Brown Tortoise (Manouria emys).
It can weigh up to 25 kg and is believed to be among the most primitive of living tortoises, based on the molecular and morphological studies.
With a diet of leaves, bamboo shoots, fruit, roots, tubers, mushrooms, insects, crabs, prawns and frogs, no one is going to accuse this tortoise of being a fussy eater!
Cool fact: Asian Brown Tortoise is the only tortoise that lays its eggs above ground in a nest, which the female makes of leaf litter.
These tortoises never wander far from water sources, such as a ponds, rivers and streams. They are typically found in highland tropical forests, and prefer cooler and more moist conditions than other tortoise species. When it is really dry, they don’t move much, but just burrow themselves in damp soil or under logs or leaf litter. What do you do when the weather is hot? We’d also prefer to stay at home and ‘burrow’ ourselves in an air-conditioned room!
