No Prizes For Guessing What The Malayan Snail-Eati..

No prizes for guessing what the Malayan Snail-eating Turtle (Malayemys macrocephala) mainly feasts on! This small aquatic #turtle has a large head (macro = big, cephala = head) and strong jaws, which enables it to crush the shells of snails. On occasion, it also eats mussels, crabs, shrimp, and insects.

It is found in slow-moving bodies of water with muddy bottoms and lots of vegetation, such as marshes, swamps, rice paddies and irrigation canals. Females are much larger than males.

This turtle is threatened by habitat destruction and is under pressure from collection for food and traditional medicine. It is also collected in smaller numbers for the pet trade.
