And The Sixth Turtle Species Is The Yellow-Headed ..

And the sixth #turtle species is the Yellow-headed Temple Turtle (Heosemys annandalii). The species name, annandalii, is in honor of Scottish herpetologist Nelson Annandale. It is found in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and possibly Myanmar.

It is called a temple turtle because it is often kept in temple ponds. They are aquatic and generally herbivorous.

It has a distinct yellow and black patterned forehead, neck and yellow jaws. Their carapace is smooth and shaped like a high dome.

Unfortunately, it is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species because of their declining population – like many turtles, they are collected and traded for consumption.

Can you remember all six species so far? Stay tuned for more!
