#DYK that in Malaysia, fats, oils and grease (FOG) which is a by-product of food preparation, remain the major pollution source of our rivers and environment, and it can come from you too… Yes, You!
In many households and eateries, FOG is often improperly disposed of into sinks and drains. FOG poured down kitchen sinks accumulates and solidifies in sewer pipes that can lead to blockages, pipe bursts and overflows of raw sewage which eventually ends up in rivers. Similarly, FOG that is poured directly into drains can pollute our local waterways besides clogging the stormwater system that lead to localised flooding.
In conjunction with World Water Day, let’s all play a part in #AcceleratingChange to address water issues and safeguard our rivers.
Tips for home kitchens:
💧 Never pour FOG down a garbage disposal, sink, or storm drain. Instead, allow FOG to cool and seal it in a can or bottle and dispose of at a local recycling centre or in household trash.
For restaurant kitchens:
💧 Follow local FOG management and disposal requirements for restaurants to minimise repair costs and prevent fines.
💧 Install FOG traps in sinks and maintain the traps by cleaning them regularly.
💧 Recycle or sell used oil instead of throwing it away.
💧 Train employees about proper FOG management
Take a moment to think before pouring waste such as FOG down the sink and drain, and help protect rivers as our drinking water sources.
