We Receive Many Messages Daily From Feeders And In..

WE receive many messages daily from feeders and independent rescuers asking for help to remove dogs from commercial areas and housing estates because the councils were after them. We tell them that removing the dogs and dumping them into shelters is not a sustainable move. The best option would be for the feeders or rescuers would be:

1. Get the dogs neutered

2. Ask vet to notch the ears with a V sign

3. Put a collar on each of the doggos

4. Attach a tag to the collar with your contact number

5. Speak to the people in the commercial area or housing estates nicely and respectfully explaining to them that when one pack is removed, another will just move in. It is a safer bet for them to have familiar dogs that will also guard the place and keep other dogs out. Explain to them that there will not be any new puppies as the dogs have been fixed and hence the population will be controlled. Since they are being fed daily, there won’t be any rummaging of dustbins and as the dogs are all neutered, there won’t be any howls and fights during mating season. Do not antagonise these people, as you do not want them to call the authorities on the dogs.

6. Tell them you will take responsibility for the dogs and to call you if there are any problems.

7. Tell the feeders not to dump food all over the place. They have to wait there until the dogs have eaten and then clear-up the remnants.

8. Do not cross swords with dog hating residents or the local councils. You need them to cooperate with you. We learnt this over the years. The local councils can be helpful if they feel you are not going to create chaos for them. But at the same time do not put yourself in a position where they can make you pay big amounts of money to remove dogs from the pound. This is not sustainable as well. Negotiate. Post on social media platforms praising councils that allow dogs to be removed from the pound by rescuers and feeders. Send them the link where they are being praised. Being a small-scale hypocrite to save lives is okay. As for the residents, do not drag their reputation through the mud or scream and yell at them. They are just regular people like you. Their anger against you will translate into stronger hate for the dogs.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: The law is on the side of the local authorities as both the Animal Welfare Act and the Animal Act gives precedence to public health and safety. There are many loopholes and grounds for the authorities to justify the catching and culling of street dogs. So, we have to be smart when dealing with the matter.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

MDDB's main activities revolve around rescuing dogs from the local council pounds as well as off the streets. Once they have been rescued, the dogs are vaccinated and neutered before being put up for adoption.
