A Foster Fail Furrytale For Kaokao. Kaokao Came To..

A foster fail furrytale for Kaokao 🏰💕

Kaokao came to us via one of our mobile sterilisation clinics in 2020. She had deep bite wounds on her neck and chest and needed urgent medical attention, so the team transferred her to our shelter. With time and treatment, her wounds healed and she went from a sick, scruffy, injured pup to a little snowball with the sweetest soul.

In September this year, Kaokao was one of the lucky dogs chosen by our partner rescue Jack Russell Terrier Rescue Ontario (JRTRO) to travel to Canada before the CFIA import ban took effect.

On arrival, she was fostered by Zoltan, a new JRTRO foster. Being a university instructor, he worked limited hours outside the home and so had lots of time to escort Kaokao around her new neighbourhood in Toronto. Kaokao lacked confidence around other dogs and needed someone with patience to help her adjust to her new surroundings, so they were a great duo.

As time went by, Zoltan realised he couldn’t imagine life without Kaokao. They had bonded and were a great match. He made the decision to adopt her himself and sent us the following update:

“Greetings from Toronto! First of all, thank you for bringing Kaokao (who now goes by the simpler name KK (kaykay) into my life. I can’t imagine what a change this must have been for her, from the sunny beaches of Thailand to downtown Toronto. I mean, I like to imagine she came from sunny beaches and had a great life running around and enjoying the beautiful postcard scenery, but that probably wasn’t her life as a street dog.

She is adjusting well. She is still quite timid in general but comes running to the door shaking her furry little alien ears in excitement, and that’s actually one of my favorite things now, to come home to that little fluffy ear shake.

She walks beautifully on a leash. She came like that from Thailand, so she must have been taught there. She just wants to go for a walk. She has come with me on a few short runs now, we did a few 2-3 km runs together already and she runs beautifully with me. Again, just keeps running along, hardly ever getting distracted.

A couple of days ago we had our first snowfall of the season and she wasn’t all that impressed… I can’t blame her! I’m not a big fan of winter, either.

I want to give her a bit more time to settle in and then next year I’d like to start with some sort of training class to get her a bit more socialized. For now, I think she is happy to just be a lazy, pampered dog with a solid home base and a human that is absolutely in love with her.”
