RESCUING and treating injured or sick animals is costly, which is why kill shelters euthanise animals that need long-term treatment.

However, for no-kill shelters such as canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB), euthanasia is not an option.

“We do not kill but we rehabilitate and rehome (the animals) and this is very challenging as a lot of cost is incurred,” said MDDB director Irene Low.

MDDB rescues and admits many injured dogs monthly, especially those that are knocked down by vehicles.

Fortunately, renowned veterinary establishment Gasing Veterinary Medical Centre in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, has been helping out by giving MDDB credit terms.

“If not for Gasing Veterinary Medical Centre, many of the injured dogs would have died without treatment,” said Low.

Of late, MDDB’s bills have escalated “sky high”, according to Low.

As such, the canine welfare organisation has kickstarted a fundraising project, aptly named Project Gasing.

MDDB volunteers will be seated outside Gasing Veterinary Medical Centre, from 11am to 6pm until Sunday to raise funds to pay off the bills.

“We hope to settle some of the bills in these three days and will print out invoices if anyone wants to settle the bills,’’ said Low.

Donors could pay at MDDB’s makeshift counter or pay at the veterinary centre’s reception and get a receipt for their payments, she said.

Those who want to help out can also WhatsApp 012-250 1497 or 016-667 4193 or write to projectgasingmddb@gmail.com

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

MDDB's main activities revolve around rescuing dogs from the local council pounds as well as off the streets. Once they have been rescued, the dogs are vaccinated and neutered before being put up for adoption.
