Canine welfare NGO hosts Halloween fundraiser, launches own-brand dog shampoo

PETALING JAYA: Running a charitable organisation currently is a big challenge more so if it involves animals.

“With a sluggish economy, people just cannot give as much as they used to.

“And human related charities are given priority as opposed to animal charities,” said canine welfare project Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) director Irene Low.

Going by the current situation, added Low, and since MDDB is registered as a non-profit company, the organisation is working hard towards becoming a social enterprise.

“That is the only way we can achieve sustainability,” said Low.

As its maiden project towards becoming a social enterprise, MDDB has come up with its first product under its own line MDDB Essentials For Doggos.

“Our first product is dog shampoo distributed under our own brand and we hope to come up with more products,” said Low.

The shampoo will be launched at the rescue group’s fundraising event on Oct 30.

Dubbed the MDDB Fundraising Paw-ty, the event is also a Halloween party attended by some of MDDB’s resident dogs.

The party, from 3pm to 7pm, will be held at M.O.T.D @ The Earth Bukit Jalil.

Entry is at RM88 per adult and RM40 for children below 12, with food and beverages, door gifts, lucky draws and game prizes.

Coming back to the shampoo, Low said the 500ml bottle will be retailed at RM60 with RM15 from the sale of each bottle going to independent rescuers to neuter street dogs.

“We feel this is important for stray management and the funds from the sale will be distributed in Selangor.

The face of the MDDB shampoo is a male canine that was rescued sometime last year.

“Jack suffered serious fractures in his jaw and legs.

“He is doing very well after surgery and is a happy dog despite the trauma he had undergone,” said Low.

Jack will be at hand to receive guests at the fundraising event, added Low.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

MDDB's main activities revolve around rescuing dogs from the local council pounds as well as off the streets. Once they have been rescued, the dogs are vaccinated and neutered before being put up for adoption.
