Happy Has Been Safely Cremated And Interned At The..

Happy has been safely cremated and interned at the Nirvana memorial Park Pet Cemetery.

When we asked if should pay for her to be interned there, given that Nirvana had just given us a free niche and cremation Patch only recently, there were 95 % saying she deserved the last resting place whilst 5 % said otherwise.

We notice that all those who had agreed for a forever resting niche for Happy there, were those who knew her story, met her or were our regular donors.

Those who dissented were mostly people who did not know her story or those who had just started following us.

There were also suggestions that we cremate her and bury her ashes in a pot (including the ashes of our other dead dogs) or bury her at our garden with the rest of our dogs and carry out yearly prayers.

These they said was what they did for their pets.

Firstly, we must say that the dogs under MDDB’s care are not our pets. They are our wards just like how children at orphanages are wards of the home operator or the state governments.

These children do not become the children of the home administrator.

Secondly, MDDB has a committee made-up of Buddhists, Hindus and Christians. We also have born again Christians who frown upon rituals.

Hence, we never have any religious ceremonies. We tried once when our Justice died but the entire thing turned into a garbled confusion.

And we cannot bury animals on land which does not belong to us because the owner may not want dead animals to be strewn all over his garden, lawn or backyard.

But most importantly, Happy was part of a trio that taught us that nothing was impossible, showed the same to other rescuers and rescue groups as well as opened the doors to vets to treat beyond the conventional norms.

The first was Justice – when his rescuer gave him to us in 2011, we did not know what to do. Justice was also the first dog, according to the vet who operated on him, to have a spinal cord surgery.

Initially we did not know how to handle him but through much trial and tribulations, we managed to overcome the odds and Justice showed everyone how paralysed dogs can speed on wheels.

Then there was Patch – barely a month old with both his front limbs crushed to a pulp.

When one of our then volunteers brought him to a well-known pet hospital for treatment, she was told to put him down.

When we refused, she was humiliated and chased out of the building.

However, the doctors at Gasing Veterinary Hospital decided to give him a chance and Patch grew-up into a diva to be reckoned with and faced the months of pain he had to undergo during his healing period like a champion.

Then there was Happy, with more than half of her face festering and eaten by maggots.

She was just a puppy then but put up a tough fight and bore the pain of her face being scrapped daily.

Happy was admitted at Gasing Vet for 9 months undergoing treatment and in spite of the daily ordeal of having her face scrapped and dressed, she would wag her tail profusely at just about anyone who stopped to say a kind word or stroke and pat her head.

All three grew-up into friendly dogs with very strong characters.

For us and many others, including the vets that treated them, these three dogs were trail blazers.

That is also why Nirvana gave both Justice and Patch their best packages and a niche in their columbarium free of charge.

It is just that it was too soon after Patch for us to request the same for Happy.

These three dogs deserve to be immortalised and remembered always not only by us but by others whose paths they had crossed.

Therefore, thank you all who contributed and wished Happy’s soul well and thank you Ms Ooi for buying Happy a niche at the columbarium.

All your contributions have Happy the farewell she deserved.

And thank you Ms Sandra De’ Cruz for reminding us about how stoic Happy had been in spite of her pain and agony.

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better

Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better is a canine welfare programme initiated by non-profit organisation Community Development and Integration Initiative (CDII).

MDDB's main activities revolve around rescuing dogs from the local council pounds as well as off the streets. Once they have been rescued, the dogs are vaccinated and neutered before being put up for adoption.
