Dear everyone,
Many thanks to everyone for sending positive vibes to Kitty, who is now called “George” by Choy Foong. Our grateful thanks also go to DT for offering to take full responsibility for George (in other words, adopting George!) and our volunteers for helping out today.
Here’s what happened at the vet’s this afternoon:
Hi Kah Yein,
I apologize for the late update. Had family visiting this evening; they just left..
Kitty (whom I had informally named George, but I believe DT is considering a new name, a strong name – which I think would be very appropriate) has been admitted at the vet’s, where he is being treated by DT’s vet. He’s such a sweet boy – gave no trouble at all when they did his jugular draw.Temp is normal, but his WBC is elevated. They didn’t get a neutrophil level, but are going to continue to treat with antibiotics, which had been started at the previous vet. Which I think is prudent. He appears anemic too, but we didn’t discuss that in great detail. It sounds like the vet will be attempting to save both hind legs. Right hind leg, the bad one, doesn’t seem to have necrotic tissue, if I understood the vet correctly (Lydia please correct me if I’m wrong here)although it looks horrid to me. There issome concern that gangrene may set in – if it does, then amputation is probably the only option. I’m keeping fingers crossed against that. X-rays show that the left hind leg has compound fracture(s? – not sure), with bone visible through the wound. I can’t imagine how painful that must be, and I cringe to think how much he must have hurt when I carried him home in my arms on Sunday, and on Monday and Tuesday when I visited him and put him on my lap
Excerpts from the first vet’s note to the new vet: ” … presented with severely swollen right hind limb with both hind not showing any neurological reflexes. Left hind leg has an open wound. … Antibiotics administered, tolfedine, and beta-12 … Hind legs recovering sensory and motor response. A broken bone is seen from the left hind open wound.”
For now, I believe the vet wants to wait and see how his suspected infection responds to the antibiotics. She plans to put the left hind leg in a cast, probably for six weeks. If the right leg fails to heal/respond to the meds, and has to be amputated, the vet plans to put pins in the left leg while kitty is under. He will also be receiving metacam for at least three days. I personally do not like metacam, but it has its uses and the vet probably has weighed its pros and cons in light of the circumstances.
I cannot thank all of you enough – everyone, from you to DT, Lydia, Megaa and Mr. Lim for everything you’ve all done and offered to do for kitty. There’s probably a whole many more anonymous wellwishers than I’m aware of who have been keeping kitty in their thoughts and sending prayers and good wishes. To all of you, thank you, from the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of this kitty. I was in tears as I wished him good luck with his treatment and new life. I already miss him, but I believe he is in good hands and a loving home, thanks to all of you.
Oh, and the vet will be updating DT on how he’s progressing – which I am looking forward to hearing about. DT and I have exchanged e-mail addresses, and she has assured me that she will send updates on his progress, and pictures
