Urgent: Fosterer/Rehomer Needed For Injured Cat (Wong Choy Foongs)

Good evening. I live in the US, and am currently in M’sia visiting
family through the 21st of March. I’m in need of suggestions/ideas. I
came across a cat with pretty horrific leg injuries this past Sunday.
He presently can’t/won’t walk, and I have no idea how he’s survived so
far dragging his body around by his front legs. The vet’s initial
diagnosis is that his right hind leg will probably need to be
amputated, and the vet is currently treating to try to save his left
hind leg. The vet has urged me to have x-rays done at another hospital
(none available at current clinic) to determine the severity of injury
of the left hind leg before we discuss options. He’s currently being
boarded at the vet clinic. I’m reliant on family members (not animal
lovers) for transport, and will likely not be able to get x-rays done
till this Friday. If both hind legs are not save-able, he will have to
be put down. If the left hind leg can be saved, he needs a home after
the right hind leg is amputated. The vet feels that it would be kinder
to euthanize than to release a three-legged kitty back out on the
streets, esp with packs of dogs in the neighbourhood, and I have to
agree with her. If a permanent or foster home can be found, I am
willing to pay for his amputation. I am currently paying for his
boarding at the vet’s. Unfortunately, this decision on whether to
amputate the right leg or to euthanize needs to be made by Tuesday the
20th at the very latest, and a home needs to be found by then, because
he will need post-op care. I leave M’sia on Wednesday March 21.

This kitty is about 1 year old, weighs 2.16 kg, and is an amazingly
sweet, docile, trusting cat. When I found him, I picked him up and
carried him home in my arms, without a box – a 15 min walk – and he
gave me no trouble at all, no aggression, no struggling, etc. He
snuggled against me the entire walk home, purring most of the way.
I’ve walked to the clinic to see him both yesterday and today, and he
spent 1.5 hours in my lap yesterday, and another 45 minutes today,
just purring away. It breaks my heart to even contemplate euthanasia,
but I will not let him suffer a long, agonizing death through
starvation or being mauled by dogs or worse. Would you or your network
of contacts be able to assist this poor kitty in any way? I’m not
looking for financial assistance – but for someone to be his advocate/
be involved in his care, fostering and/or eventual rehoming. Thank
you.

Ps – I’m presently staying in OUG in Jln Kelang Lama.

I have texted a caregiver to see if she can take over this case since she has a soft spot for animals with special needs. I have also recommended Choy Foong to our vet should she need X-Rays done and a second opinion on what treatment can be done for this cat.

If you are able to take over this case since Choy Foong is going back overseas, we will subsidise the necessary treatment (according to our policies). You may wish to try acupuncture and other non-mainsteam treatments as well.

We know of a vet who successfully rehabilitated a two-legged cat and the cat is now his own pet at his clinic.

From Choy Foong:

Dear Kah Yein,

Thank you so very much for writing back so quickly! This lady with the home for cats sounds wonderful. I’m hoping she’ll be moved to help this poor kitty.
I’m somewhat limited in terms of where I can take kitty because I don’t drive here; I’m dependent on my family for transport. Kitty needs x-rays to determine the severity of the injury to his left hind leg – but I haven’t been able to find anyone to take me there (the OUG vet doesn’t do x-rays) yet, not till Friday (although I’m still trying). But I’m noting down your vet for future reference.
We’re unsure of the nature of the injury, but the vet I took him to and is boarding him at seems to think the right hind leg is dead – that the nerves are dead, no response to stimuli, no flinching although the wound looks really really bad. Kitty protests though when I try to look at the wound on the inner left thigh, that’s the leg the vet is trying to save. She initially thought abuse, but she’s also wondering now if he was hit by a car.
I am intrigued at the possibility of acupuncture treatments helping him. I am now wondering if there could be a chance he may not need amputation? I do believe in acupuncture – my own late kitty saw a veterinary acupuncturist in the US on a regular basis, and I believe it helped alleviate some of the discomfort she experienced from her arthritis.
Dana’s story is really heartening to read! I knew it was possible in the US, but wasn’t aware it is here too. Thank you so very much!
And thank you for adding us to your blog
I am currently unemployed, but am paying for kitty’s boarding, tx and possibly amputation from my vacation savings fund but I should be able to swing at least up to the cost of the amputation surgery, if that’s needed (if this wonderful lady offers to give him a home, I will defer to her and her vet’s judgment whether to proceed with the amputation or not). I want to try to make finances less of a worry for anyone who can step up to the plate and care for this kitty – I don’t want the thought of the cost to be a deterrent, if you know what I mean. He is the sweetest little boy, so docile and trusting, and I want to believe the universe is not ready to receive him back yet.
I’m also wondering what your thoughts are if he loses both legs. Should euthanasia be considered then? In the States, we do have special customized wheels that help keep paralyzed cats and dogs mobile, but I don’t know how realistic that is here in Malaysia, or what other options there are for him if he has to lose both legs.
Should you or this lady wish to contact me, my cellphone number while I’m in KL is017-376-7292.
Thank you again for writing back and for caring, not just for this sweet little guy, but for all animals.
Regards,
Choy Foong

UPDATES at 1.33am – I have communicated with Choy Foong and she is very keen to go all the way to help Kitty. She was not aware that we have rehabilitated special needs animals here or that we have three-legged and two-legged animals, since she had been living in the U.S. for sometime. However, her problem is that she will be going back overseas soon. She needs someone to take over this case and to take responsibility for Kitty.

First things first, Choy Foong needs transport to take Kitty to the vet for an X-Ray to determine if one leg can be saved. If anyone can provide transport, please contact Choy Foong directly. Our vet has an X-Ray machine and he is located in SS17, Subang Jaya. I have also suggested that Choy Foong contacts the vet who had successfully rehabilitated a two-legged cat and the cat, Dana, is his pride and joy now. Please see link above.

Let’s help Kitty, folks. Let’s put our heads together and make this happen.

I need to go to bed now. It’s been a very long day, with lots of cases, but some cannot be reported (yet) as we need a “cooling-off” period before the news can be made public. Hmm…sensitive stuff, this animal welfare work, and why so? Simply because it involves HUMANS! Goodnight, folks.

UPDATES on 14th March, at 7.00am – I was so pleasantly surprised this morning when the lady with a soft spot for special needs cats left an sms on my phone early this morning saying she would be happy to help Kitty. Until she gives me consent to reveal her name, I shall respect her privacy for now. I’m awaiting further news now. Meanwhile, I’ve also informed Choy Foong of the good news and contacted the vet who has a two-legged cat to see if he can help.

We need transport help as Choy Foong does not wish to delay anymore. Kitty needs the X-Ray done as soon as possible. Time is precious, and I’ve learnt that for all injuries, every hour counts. Please, can anyone help with transport? Please contact Choy Foong if you can. Her hp is017-376-7292.

Here’s Choy Foong’s last email last night (sent after I had gone to bed):

Dr. Chan,

I am sitting here close to tears. Thank you so much. The despair that I’ve felt the last two days is lifting. There truly is hope for this dear little kitty.
It would be wonderful if the cabby would be able to take us; it would make it possible for us to go see your vet. I’ll call his office tomorrow to see if we can get kitty in, so if transport comes through, we can move right away.
I went all the way with my late kitty, Meowzi, never giving up until her little body gave out. All through her diabetes, mammary cancer (yes, we beat that!) and kidney disease. We had the resources to do so then, I still had a job. I don’t know how we’ll do it, this time around, but I have to trust that the universe has a plan for kitty, and it will provide. I believe kitty and I crossed paths for a reason, and I just couldn’t fathom how it could be that I would be his death sentence. I am beginning to understand now, that I need not be.
I shall cross my fingers that this wonderful lady will be able to adopt kitty. This is my first visit home in eight years, and I have been trying to spend as much time as I can with my family as I do not know when I will be able to see them again, but I will try to at least have the x-rays done and treatment options discussed before I leave. Time is not on my side as there is much yet I need to take care of in the next week, but I will trust that this will all work out. The universe works in mysterious ways.
Thank you. You are an angel.
Choy-Foong
Folks, let’s all be angels (without wings!) and rally together to help Kitty and Choy Foong. We can do this, if we work together.

UPDATES at 8.10am – The lady with the soft spot will arrange transport for Kitty to go to the vet’s today. I’m trying to contact Choy Foong to give her the happy news now. Our lady with the soft spot wants to be known only as “DT” and we shall respect that.

UPDATES at 8.25am - Have spoken to Choy Foong and passed the good news to her. Have communicated with DT too. All is well now. The next thing is to take Kitty to the vet and wait for a second opinion. We hope it’s only one leg that has to go. Or, maybe both legs can be saved? Wonders never cease, folks. Pray hard that all will go well.

UPDATES at 10.26am – DT would like to opt for non-mainstream treatment for Kitty before resorting to amputation. She says she is very inspired by Sunshine’s case, so she’ll like to try that first. I’ve given her Dr Susanna and my friend, Lydia’s, contacts. Have contacted Lydia as well and Lydia will accompany Choy Foong to the vet today and help her out. DT, bless her kind heart, has offered to pay for Kitty’s treatment entirely, including the previous treatment, but Choy Foong says she will settle that herself. All seems to be going well for now. Kitty has good affinity, I must say. And, we work very hard, too…to make it happen! Keep those positive vibes coming, folks.

UPDATES at 10.40am - We would like to thank our two readers for offering transport help for Choy Foong. All is well for now. Will update when there is further news. Thank you very much for responding to our SOS.
