PIX FROM INTERNET TO ILLUSTRATE A SHELTER WHICH HOARDES.
We receive countless messages and requests daily to ‘rescue’ packs of dogs off the streets and put them at our sanctuary. This is not the method to help street dogs. Dogs are rescued only if they are too old, too young, mothers with puppies or are severely injured. Taking in dogs at random and stuffing them in shelters is called hoarding. Somehow along the way, hoarding has been misinterpreted and misrepresented as rescuing. The way to help street dogs is to neuter and manage them in their original location. It is challenging but in some places such as Ipoh, neutered and marked street dogs that are managed by feeders are not caught by the council. We can only push for that to happen here if everyone cooperates instead of always urging rescue groups and shelters to take them in. Ensuring the safety of street animals needs everyone collective efforts. Can we agree on that? Furthermore, when a shelter starts hoarding, there will be a major compromise on the standard of care and cleanliness. There will also be extensive dog fights which results in serious injuries and deaths. Dogs are territorial pack animals. Stuffing them in one place will create a situation where dozens of packs will fight each other to control the ‘territory’ and secure dominance.
