Stray Free Selangor x SPCA Selangor
A majority of the requests we receive on daily basis is about stray animals on the street; either asking us to remove them, or to to relocate them. Unfortunately with our experience working with strays and rescuers, relocation/sending the animals to a shelter is not sustainable nor viable long term.
Relocation will result in the animals going missing after a while, with the newly-introduced animals attacked by the existing population, or disorientated and unable to find any food source in the new area. Even if a shelter is willing to take in new animals, some animals may not be able to adapt to the new environment with so many animals cramped up in 1 small area. They get stressed out, immune systems start to get compromised, they fall sick, and worse, they die.
This is where Stray Free Selangor programme comes in. SFS was started back in 2017 under the royal patronage of Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin. The aim is to put the stray population under control in a humane manner, and at the same time educate the public about co-existing with strays animals. Since then, hundreds of thousands of ringgit Malaysia have been spent to assist rescuers, feeders and even owners who adopted stray animals from the street, subsidising the cost of neutering. We are most grateful to the companies, corporations and clinics who jumped on board to provide support for this programme.
In March 2022, a group of rescuers contacted us about SFS, and due to the sheer number of animals that they have, we rejigged our SFS programme; and mobilised our clinic and staff instead. We asked the rescuers to hold the animals in an area, and deployed our team on site, set up temporary operations in 2 locations for optimum efficacy.
The entire project (SFS Rawang) was a success. In just a week, we managed to neuter 102 dogs! Each dog was tagged to indicate that they’ve been fixed, and returned to the rescuers.
SFS and SPCA Selangor subsidised over half of the cost of the entire operation, and extremely grateful to the volunteers too! #strayfreeselangor #spcaselangor #sfs #bekindtoallkind #tnrm #spayneuter
