A Pregnant Cat And A Little Tail-Less Lizard

This evening, my husband wanted to go out for dinner, so we drove to one of the coffee shops nearby. As I alighted from the car, a pregnant cat came mewing towards me. She walked up to my feet and let me pat her.

In my heart of hearts, I wish I could take her home and give her a safe place to deliver her babies. But then, what would happen after that? Each time we take an animal home, we must always be prepared to adopt the animal, and in this case, she and her babies, should we fail to find them another home.

As much as I wish I could take her, I knew I could not, so I did the next best thing – give her some food. The coffee shop refused to sell me some chicken meat for the cat, so we didn’t eat there. I said I’d pay for it, but they said there was no such item on their menu. Sigh…

We went elsewhere to eat, and I ordered wantan mee so that I can give the chicken meat to the cat.

Throughout dinner, I thought about the cat and worried where she might give birth and if her kittens would survive.

Right after we finished our meal, I said we’ll go back and look for her. My husband said she probably won’t be there anymore by the time we get there again, but never mind, no harm trying.

So, we drove back there and I went looking for her.

Hah! Would you believe it, my husband found her under a parked car on the road.

 Here she is…

She happily ate up two pieces of the chicken (I brought three pieces in all). I brought the chicken in a plastic bag for her. She did not seem extraordinarily hungry, but she ate, nonetheless.

Bye, kitty. You take care now and don’t go out to the road, you hear?

I left with a heavy heart. I wish I ran a cat sanctuary, then I could take her home and give her and her babies a safe abode to live in, away from the vehicles and the street.

Of course I consoled myself that she wasn’t mewing pitifully when she approached me, but rather, as my husband said, “All cats know you, she was just coming to say “hello” to you.” Well, it did seem like a friendly hello, actually, and not a cry for help. She also looked well-fed and her coat looked healthy. After greeting me, she walked back to the shop.

Maybe she belongs to someone, my husband said. And it’s true that taking her home may not be the best thing to do; she might be so stressed with the unfamiliar grounds and try to run back to her street. Caging her might stress her out. And what about my brood of 7? Bobby wouldn’t mind, of course. But Indy? Cow & Bunny, and the rest? Yes, got to think of them as well.

Oh well, a million and one “maybe”s.  The truth of the matter is, I cannot take her back, as much as I wish I could, so this is all I can do – give her a meal, wish her well and keep her in my prayers.

I hope she is part of Ah Fatt’s colony at the market. This shop is just opposite the marketplace where Ah Fatt and his friend look after the cats. They have set up cages in a corner of the market where they put little kittens and nursing mothers, if they spot any.

I wish her well.

What an imperfect life we live. We’ll just have to do the best we can.

As I sit here now, writing this, Bunny is intimidating Tiger….I have to stop the fight before it happens.

There is just the 7 of you here, and life is pretty good and you guys still want to fight?

But something interesting happened just now. Cow was very engrossed with a spot on the floor. I didn’t know what it was until I saw a small lizard without its tail. I thought it was dead, so I got a bucket of water, to wash it away. But upon approaching the lizard, Indy was looking at it and it moved.

It’s still alive!

I told Indy not to attack it, and he didn’t. Good boy, Indy.

Cow, Tiger and Tabs looked on as I took the broom and dustpan and gently pushed the little lizard into the dustpan.

Then, I took it out to the Stargate and as though reading my mind, the little tail-less lizard “disembarked” from the dustpan and scuttled out onto the grass, safe from my 7 cats.

Tabs followed me and watched the entire episode. I hope she has learnt by watching that she is not supposed to attack little lizards. She’s a very smart girl.

So, yes, life is imperfect, but we can perform little, tiny random acts of kindness, and make a difference.
