Calling For Tougher Enforcement Of Dog And Cat Bre..

Calling for tougher enforcement of dog and cat breeding welfare laws 💪
Last year, two new pieces of animal welfare legislation came into effect here in Thailand: Dog Welfare in Dog Breeding Farms and Cat Welfare in Cat Breeding Farms. Soi Dog was closely involved in drafting this legislation. We put forward proposals and ensured the regulations were robust and thorough.
Of course, we could never support the intentional breeding of dogs and cats, especially while there are so many in need on the streets and in shelters, but we recognise that it takes place and want to ensure the wellbeing of all animals involved.
Among many other things, the legislation lays out the diet and amount an dog or cat is fed, the size of their enclosure or resting place, their access to exercise, socialisation and veterinary care, the maximum number of litters they produce in their lifetime and at which point they should be retired from breeding altogether.
However, passing legislation is only half the battle, and enforcement is absolutely crucial.
Frustratingly, inspections of breeding farms and pet shops has been challenging due to pandemic-related restrictions. But now that the situation with Covid-19 is improving and the world is opening up again, we are calling for more inspections, tougher enforcement and successful prosecutions, and we hope to see these come to fruition soon.
Real policy progress is being made because of your support, and we thank you. Here’s to a brighter future for dogs and cats, domestic and stray.
❗️ If you are in Thailand and have concerns about a backyard breeder, breeding farm or pet shop, please report them to the Department of Livestock Development via the DLD 4.0 smartphone application. You can also report them to us here at Soi Dog Foundation at clinic@soidog.org ❗️
