Pets Are Not Furniture. Do Not Simply Discard Them..

Do not simply discard them
It has been recently shared in Parliament that there has been an increase in the number of pet abandonments in the past 5 years. Over half of these cases involved the abandonment of cats. We are also deeply concerned that global trends are indicative that we may soon see a further increase in the abandonment of ‘pandemic pets’ as people return to work.
At SPCA Singapore, we’ve had people tying their dogs to our gates as ‘surprise gifts’ to us, refusing to pick up a lost pet after being contacted repeatedly, and even sending us crates and crates full of cats through transporters. Every day we receive at least 3-5 requests for pet surrenders.
A pet is for life. While we encourage people to adopt animals, we also want to emphasise that bringing an animal home is a huge commitment that should not be taken lightly. Your cute tiny puppy will grow into a large dog that requires a lot of your time. Your cat will grow old; requiring more attention and medical care that may put a strain on your wallet. A pet is a lifetime commitment, not a piece of furniture to be tossed about. They are your responsibility, and they are trusting you to provide them with a safe and loving home.
Let us work together as a community to be more responsible so that we can build a more compassionate Singapore that loves and takes care of its animals.
#SPCASingapore would like to remind the public that abandonment is a crime and is a chargeable offence.
