You may wondering if there is any progress on the hoarder’s application to us for food subsidy.
Yes, actually, there is.
Here’s what has happened in the past week.
Since this hoarder is not dwelling in Selangor, I needed some help to find out what she does and what is going on. I found the help and apparently, she IS a hoarder, by all definitions.
She just keeps taking in animals from the streets, thinking that she is doing them a big favour, and she obviously has no intention to stop, no matter what anybody says. She resorts to borrowing money from others and does not return the money, causing others to suffer. Her animals are NOT vaccinated or spayed-neutered. They barely have enough food to eat and that is why she has asked me for food subsidy, specifying the number of packs of kibble, canned fish and rice.
She does bring the animals to the vet, but by then, it would be far too late. Even the vet scolds her for this.
There was a dog with distemper recently, and despite the vet’s advice to isolate the dog, she refused to comply and this resulted in 18 dogs contracting distemper and dying miserable deaths.
Take a look at this rescuer’s comment. This rescuer knows a lot about the hoarder as they are from the same town. Obviously, this rescuer has a most unfavourable opinion of the hoarder because the rescuer has witnessed too many of the hoarder’s suffering animals and can bear to see no more. The rescuer feels the hoarder isn’t deserving of any help at all and I can understand why:
However, the “kawan” in the write-up has been in touch with me and the “kawan” was the one who appealed for help on behalf of the hoarder. Actually, the “kawan” applied first, but we could not help the “kawan” because she supports an illegal breeder and she herself intends to breed. For the “kawan”, it’s a clear-cut issue, we can only help if she gives up her support for the breeder and her intentions to breed. She is not willing, so we cannot help. End of story, and the “kawan” did not pursue further.
Instead, the next day, the “kawan” wrote to me appealing for help for this hoarder. So, I called the hoarder and you all know what happened in the phonecall (please see link above).
Having spoken to the hoarder on the phone, I am convinced that she IS a hoarder. She would not listen to reason; she defends her action of taking in street animals as the “correct” thing to do. She wasn’t much interested in my offer for vaccination or spay-neuter, but that was all I offered her – No food subsidy until you vaccinate and spay-neuter your animals (which we will subsidise on our rates).
Yes, she is not deserving of any help, but her animals are. If I reject her, I would also be rejecting her poor surviving animals and she would just carry on doing what she does. Her animals would die when there is outbreak of disease and there would be no change.
Every single one of her animals are better off on the streets than under her “care” , but there is no law to stop her from taking in the animals. And she continues to take, despite not having enough food to feed them, let alone to vaccinate and give them medical help.
If we purport to instill change through education, then this is what I must do – “Force” her to get her animals vaccinated and spayed-neutered, because that is all the help I’m offering.
It is said that the greatest miracle in the world is the miracle of education, of turning an evil person into a good one. Then, let us give a chance for this miracle to happen. Even if it doesn’t, at least we have tried.
I am currently liaising with the “kawan”. The “kawan” understands the need to vaccinate and spay-neuter as her animals are all medically treated and well-cared for.
Let us see if any receipts for vaccination comes my way…
Let us wait…and pray.
For every dog/cat that is vaccinated, that one life is saved, to a certain extent. It would be better off than what it was before this.
One step at a time, that’s all we have.
Our motivation is to help her animals, and in the process of doing this, let’s hope she gets helped as well.
