#DYK In 2019, forest fires in Indonesia pumped at least 708 million tonnes of greenhouse gas into the atmosphere – almost double the emissions from the fires that swept through the Brazilian Amazon the same year – and cost the Indonesian economy USD5.2 billion?
Despite efforts in raising awareness and capacity building for prevention, early detection, and initial attack to suppress flames, fires can still get out of control especially in inaccessible terrain.
Technological innovations are needed to suppress large wildfires in Southeast Asia’s inland and peatland forest, perhaps?
