DOG BITES CALLS FOR A VET VISIT
Appearing along Jln. Pesawat with a bloody chest, doggo gave everyone there a fright thinking a pipe had pierced its upper body. #SPCASingapore was alerted, and he was immediately sent to our Community Animal Clinic. Upon examinations, our vets concluded that the puncture wound was more likely caused by a dog bite.
Bite wounds are a cause of concern due to the high risk of infection. When the tooth punctures the skin, bacteria from the aggressor’s mouth may multiply in the pocket under the skin. Wounds that heal with bacteria trapped under can easily turn into abscesses.
The dog’s wound was ~4cm wide and 2cm deep into the muscle tissue. Our vets ensured the wound was thoroughly cleaned, flushed, and stitched up. He was also sterilised, and has since been released back into the community after making a full recovery!
Below are 3 tips for owners if your pet gets bitten by another animal:
1. Stay calm, do not step between the animals (and risk getting bitten yourself), but instead focus on getting your pet away.
2. Avoid making eye contact with the aggressor as this could make him or her feel more threatened.
3. Once you and your pet are safely away, contact your vet immediately. (If the aggressor is a pet, additional information on the pet’s vaccination status will help.)
