🦧 are characterised by male bimaturism. Meaning, sexually mature males exhibit intra-sexual dimorphism. This could be caused by intense 🤼 male-male competition. Both male morphs actually behave differently.
Dominant males known also as “flanged males”, are larger and have fully developed secondary sexual characteristics. Look for the prominent cheek pads, long fur and a throat sack.
The subordinate males or “unflanged males” tend to be smaller, shorter fur, and have no throat sack or prominent cheek pads. It is not uncommon to mistake unflanged males from females, because they both share similar physical sizes.
