Ruptured Eyes.but He Will Have A Home (an Anonymous Angel)

I received this from someone (she has requested anonymity) on 21st February:

We have somewhat adopted a family of kittens and mother cat, and 3 of the 4 kittens have problem with their eyes. We have brought worst kitten to a vet and was said that it’s some viral infection. One of it’s eye cannot be saved as it’sinflamedand the eye is popping out, they said the other one can possibly be saved. They gave medication(brown, yellow and red fluid) and eye drops to reduce the swelling of the eyes. We gave the medicine to the 2 other kittens also and their eyes have healed(no more swelling) but still have cloudy eyes. My dad says it will clear, but will take time..Is that so?

But the one which we brought to the vet is still the same. The swelling went down but swelled again. We brought it back when the medicine finished but they say that the eyes can’t be saved and needs to be operated. He says that it’s gonna cost RM500+ for the operation. Is itreasonable? But my dad is saying better to put it down… Is it the right thing to do?Thing is it’s still healthy despite not being able to see, it can probably see shadows and light I think, it does respond when you’re in front of it, but knocks into things when running/playing chase with its siblings and can’t jump down because it can’t judge how high it is… but usually it just sits down…
Attached is a photo of the kitten that needs operation. It’s quite scary….
Thank you for reading.

I offered this lady our medical subsidy and also recommended our vet. I said we’d help her with the bill to get the cat treated.

This morning, she brought Popeye (the nickname of this cat) to our vet and it was found that both eyes of the cat had already ruptured. By the vets’ recommendation, it was a case for euthanasia, but the rescuer decided they would adopt the cat, so she wanted the surgery done to remove the eyes so that the infection will not spread. In fact, the only thing to do is to remove both the eyes.

Here’s from the rescuer after the visit to the vet’s:

It’s eyes damaged, viral infection. One eye is past saving and needs to be removed. The other eye has a slim chance of saving but it can only see light and shadow, better to remove the eye than to risk the virus fromreoccurring again. And it can’t handle two surgeries within a short period at this stage. The eye socket could possibly be infected as well and can lead to brain damage but you won’t know until the eyes are removed to see the inside. I’m hoping that isn’t the case…With him being healthy they said his recovery should take about 2-3 weeks.

Quite a long explanation was given actually, we were there for an hour. And I’m surprised with their service, I’m definitely going back there again. They explained everything; the procedure of their surgery, what each procedure would cost and even told you the name of the medication. So far most vets I went to did not explain what medication is what, only just when and how much to give.
Thank you very much for the recommendation!
This afternoon, I stopped by at the vet’s to enquire about this case. The vets were very busy, as usual, but I finally managed to speak with one of them and he explained that both eyes were already ruptured and could not be saved and that the surgery would be carried out tomorrow.
And a bit more from the rescuer later:
One of the vets checked the eyes and was suggesting to put him down, it was a question of his quality of life after this surgery. But we’ve accepted that he will have to be indoor cat and he still plays with his siblings, I believe he’ll be fine.
And she later decided she will not be taking up our medical subsidy offer:
He’s been named Popeye officially but I call him Boy Boy. My cats never have just one name. Having his condition be his name is just sad…
You can blog it but please leave me as anonymous. To be honest I was actually thinking of claiming the subsidy, but on second thought I can afford it now so why not foot the whole bill? But I guess next time, if there are anymore strays toneutermaybe I’ll ask. So far we have neutered a few strays around our house, there have been more but they’re no longer around anymore. The bills were footed by my dad with a heavy heart but it had to done or we’d get more strays.
We’ve got all in all rescued strays of 10 cats and one was which was truly adopted; Patches officially, but called Patchy by everyone else and Pooh by me.She’s been with us for 11 years now, and I’m going to bring her in soon. She’s got swollen gums.
Again, Thank You very much for the recommendation.

Well, thank YOU, for adopting Boy Boy and giving him a forever home. As a blind cat, he would need to learn to adjust and would have to be confined.

Isn’t it lovely that the rescuer has decided to adopt Boy Boy and make him an indoor cat?

Yes, as I’ve always said, angels DO exist!

Boy Boy’s surgery will be tomorrow, so let’s all pray for a successful surgery for him.

Also, just a word about the vet’s recommendation for euthanasia. Vets have to abide by their oaths, and one of them is that no animal must be allowed to suffer and endure severe pain. That is why many vets suggest euthanasia for very sick and badly injured animals, especially if the animal has no owner. However, as the rescuer, you always have every right to reject the suggestion and ask the vet to treat the animal, if you wish.

The vet that I take all my animals to is pro-euthanasia, too. But he knows that’s something I’d never do, so we respect each other for our differences, and he will go all out to treat the animals I bring in, to the best of his ability, and more often than not, we save many, many lives that way! Off the top of my head, there was Bushytail, Mickey, Sunshine, and even Indy and Vixey.
