One of the challenges of achieving sustainability in palm oil production is traceability. Since a single palm oil mill can receive palm oil fruit bunches from various growers and plantations, it is extremely difficult for companies to understand where their palm oil comes from, and whether it has been produced sustainably. One mill can typically process palm oil fruit bunches from a 50km radius, and these harvested fruits may have changed hands multiple times from the plantations or farms to the mill.
