The palm oil supply chain is complex and involves many stages, which makes it harder to achieve sustainability. The oil palm fruit is harvested from plantations, which consists of smallholders and large producers. From there, the fruit is transported to a collection facility, where it is mixed with fruits from other plantations, then it travels to a mill to be processed to create palm oil. Once the palm oil is refined, it is then shipped overseas to various manufacturers, who then process the palm oil into consumer products, chemicals, biofuels and animal feed. We, as consumers, are at the end of this supply chain. Although it may look like consumers play a small role in achieving a sustainable supply chain, we can still do our part, by choosing and demanding for certified sustainable palm oil products.
