Shelter News❗️
Cases of covid-19 have rapidly been on the rise in Thailand since the turn of the year. Whilst the impact on stray animals and our support for them has been well documented, we feared it would only be a matter of time that we saw the virus reach the Soi Dog shelter.
Those fears have now materialised with many positive cases having surfaced among staff throughout the past couple of weeks, despite every possible measure been taken to prevent it. Anybody who has been in Asia during the pandemic will know that you can’t go anywhere without your face mask!😷
Following the first reported case, we swiftly made the decision to close to visitors and volunteers and temporarily suspended our on-site sterilisation clinic, reassigning the staff to cover vital areas where they are needed.
We have subsequently created a bio-secure environment for over 60 Covid-negative staff who are now staying at the shelter 24 hours a day to care for the 1,500 dogs and cats currently living in enclosures or receiving treatment in our dog or cat hospitals.
Our animal rescue officers continue to respond to calls about dogs and cats who require medical assistance and our skeleton hospital staff are working hard to ensure the ongoing treatment of both new and existing cases. 💪
Further, we are fulfilling our commitment to community animals by continuing with our outreach programme and our mobile spay/neuter and vaccination projects across Thailand. Add to that, the emergency response that you are generously supporting to ensure food gets to animals affected by the monsoon flooding in Central Thailand.
The lock down of the shelter presents many logistical challenges but our Covid-19 response plan, which was devised at the start of the pandemic for just such circumstances, is working well. We received a visit from the local public health authority on Friday 15th October and they gave encouraging feedback on the protocols we have implemented and offered their full and ongoing advisory support.
Of course, to weather the storm requires the commitment and dedication of many people in order for it to be successful. We are, therefore, extremely grateful to be blessed with your wonderful support which is guiding a team of devoted vets and animal carers through this crisis. 🙏
Rest assured that, as always, the animals are our number one priority and by protecting our staff, we can ensure the care and welfare of the dogs and cats remains unaffected.
We will update further in due course.
Thank you so much and take care, wherever you are in the world.
