Meeting Wii...!! 26th Sep 2011, by AnimalCare
Wii was my rescue....some four years ago. Wii was rescued together with his sister, Vixey, from a rubbish heap in October 2007. Vixey turned out to be a pygmy kitten (with congenital growth retardation) and I nursed her for two years until she passed away of kidney failure. After Vixey's passing, Wii exiled himself to my back alley and simply refused to come home except for food. He would come home 5-6 times a day whenever he heard me in the kitchen.Wii was terrified of my alphas (Cow &...

Mickey, Suspected Ruptured Bladder (Cheang Ng P L's Case) 26th Sep 2011, by AnimalCare
Cheang Ng Phaik Ling called me today regarding an emergency case of a recently adopted cat who could not urinate. An appointment was made at our panel vet and I met Cheang at the vet's immediately after work today. When I reached the clinic, Cheang was already there with Mickey, the cat. Apparently, the vet was trying to look for Mickey's penis but could not find one. Cheang said Mickey is always "wet" (probably dripping urine). But where is his penis? The vet pressed the surrounding a...

Amount Subsidised By AnimalCare For Medical Cases, And Other Matters 26th Sep 2011, by AnimalCare
It has been brought to my attention that there are rescuers who apply to our fund to subsidise medical cases (which includes surgery), but at the same time, they also apply to other organisations for the same assistance. Some also source for funds through their personal facebook and twitter pages, blogs or websites as well.As such, as of today, I will reveal the actual amount subsidised by us so that readers and other people or organisations will be informed that such an amount has already been ...

Atypical Bleeding Cases Continued… 25th Sep 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal
Getting back to my interesting anaemic case load. I was still mentally trying to get my head around ‘Myff‘ and what I could have done better in her management, then I admitted another seriously anaemic patient.
The owner brought in ‘Cass’, her 12-year-old female desexed labrador cross that had crashed overnight.
The owner said ‘Cass’ had been going down hill slowly over the past few weeks but had suddenly collapsed last night.
The poor old sausage could not ev...

RetroMAD1 Helps Another Parvo Puppy! 25th Sep 2011, by AnimalCare
About a week ago, a friend asked if I had anymore RetroMAD1 to spare for a vet who had five parvo puppies. Four had already died, and one was hanging on. I only had a very tiny amount left but this was sufficient already. The RetroMAD1 was passed to my friend, who took it immediately to the vet. Here's a report from the vet:I'm using the serum you gave me for a Canine Parvo Virus case of mine at my clinic. Started on 16/9 together with my CPV treatment regime. Improvement seen are increase on app...

Urgent Appeal For Funds For A Kitten With Diaphragmatic Hernia 25th Sep 2011, by AnimalCare
Updates at 10.30am, Monday, 26th Sept - The vet informed me that Miracle, the kitten passed away yesterday. I received an sms from Marina Tham on Friday night, at 8.30pm, about a hit-and-run kitten. She was not sure at that time how bad the condition was, but I advised her to bring the kitten to the vet hospital in PJ and informed her that she could apply to PetFinder.my's medical fund as well as AnimalCare for subsidies, if need be. This, however, was not done, and the kitten was only sen...

What Have The Blueys Been Up To? 25th Sep 2011, by AnimalCare
Let's take a look at their antics today... Both can lick milk on their own, but Bagheera still wants to be syringe-fed!The vet says the sooner they get off milk, the better, so I'm weaning them off gradually. And Bagheera tries everybody's food, too!Spunk is my middle name. This is the stage where they will practically play with anything! And explore very nook and corner. I thought we had lost Baloo and looked for her everywhere....until we found her sleeping peacefully behind...

Indy And The Blueys 25th Sep 2011, by AnimalCare
Ever since Indy came back from the vet's, he seemed to have lost a bit of his confidence. He no longer sleeps on top of the car in the porch. Rather, he prefers to sleep under the neighbour's car. So, every morning and evening, I've had to go over to the neighbour's to call him back for food and medicine. Sometimes, he just wouldn't budge. Then it is Fussie Cat to the rescue.... This morning's breakfast.(Indy is missing from the gang)That's Bunny's food, but he prefers to wait for Bobb...

A Kitten Caregiving Story From Yanna 25th Sep 2011, by AnimalCare
Yanna wrote this:Dear Dr. Chan,Two weeks ago I volunteered to foster 3 month-old kittens who had been abandoned by their mother. While I have 2 adult cats of my own, I have never had any prior experience caring for kittens. However, reading your blog inspired me to take them in as I have learned so much about kitten care just from reading your posts on the Blueys (coupled with additional independent research and advice from my vet).I'm proud to say that the kittens are now much healthier, happie...

Jinxed With Atypical Bleeding Cases 24th Sep 2011, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal
I really don’t know what I did to deserve so many complicated bleeding cases over the past two weeks. I was starting to think that our in-house blood machine was not working because every case I handled seemed to be suffering from anaemia (low red blood cell count). I had to collect blood from a perfectly healthy patient to check that our machine was not playing games with me.
I have had to give two blood transfusions in a span of a week and recommended a few more but owners could not...
