Have You Heard Of Kopi Luwak? 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
My son, Jia-Wen, went for a holiday to Bali recently and came back with a most interesting story about Kopi Luwak.
He visited the factory and this is what he learnt:
There is this Asian Palm Civet called Luwak (local name) and its expertise is in detecting (and ingesting) the BEST coffee beans. These coffee beans are not digested but will pass through its intestines only to be excreted (defecated) as faeces-covered coffee beans.
The locals collect these faeces (I mean, the beans) and remove the ...

Updates On Flower And Coco (Anita Chen’s) 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Here’s updates on the two girls:
So far Flower has not vomited, only poo poo blood clot once in 24 hours and protested like crazy when her lining paper was wet. But she pulled out the drip so it had to be removed. We can’t put into other legs because the vein burt. So, no drip today. Will let her rest, force feed her water and chicken essence to get her strength up. Vet says if she can survive 5 days, she will probably make it. Today is the 5th day.
Coco is much better now, wound has...

Medical Subsidy For A Cat With Mange (Shaila Raj’s) 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Shaila Raj wrote to me a few days regarding a stray cat with mange. Since this was Shaila’s first case of dealing with a mangy cat, she was quite disturbed by all the scratching and bleeding and wanted to board the cat at the vet’s. I explained that our policies will not cover any subsidy for boarding for such a case unless the boarding is justified necessary by the vet.
I also shared with Shaila a few of our mange cases, the worst being that of Zhou2, who recovered beautifully in ju...

The Pole Escapades (mystery Solved And Rectified…for Now) 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Husband found two holes up on the gutter ledge. He is amazed how Pole discovered it, too.
Let’s call them the “Pole Holes”.
Yups, there are actually TWO holes which even Cow could get out from!
Gee… can you fix them?
You’re wasting you time, you know. I’ll just find another way, somehow.
Meanwhile, who is outside on our front lawn?
Mr Gorilla still thinks our lawn is his territory.
For the past few days, he’s been (no eye witness accoun...

The Classic “Chicken Or Egg” Question Answered!! 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Yesterday, I chanced upon a few minutes of a TV programme about the myths and legends surrounding the first 15 days of Chinese Year Year and why the 7th day is known as “everybody’s birthday.
I googled and found this: http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/Chine se_Customs/chinese-new-year-festivities.htm
An excerpt:
According to Chinese legends, Nüwa (Traditional Chinese: 女媧; Simplified Chinese: 女娲; Pinyin: nǚwā) is the goddess who created the world. Two legends refer to ...

The Pole Escapades Continues… 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Pole’s in-built mechanism got to work again this morning.
After breakfast and a big clean-up, she jumped onto the gutter ledge to try her luck. One could see in her eyes that she was bent on escaping again.
Previously, there was a gap here, but it’s been sealed off by Ah Keong, the contractor.
Everybody loves the Pole Escapade Shows. Otherwise, life at Bunny’s Place can be pretty boring.
Pole walks the length of the gutter ledge and tries every possible loophole.
Th...

Baby Alligator Found In Small Aquarium At Restaurant 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Nandhini sent me the photos below at midnight last night. Apparently, a restaurant in USJ is keeping a baby alligator (or crocodile) in a small aquarium. A quick check reveals that this species is protected and it may be breaking the law to keep this poor animal in a small aquarium.
Nandhini has called the Wildlife Crime Hotline at 019-3564194 but was told that this case belongs under the Tiger Alliance and they cannot take any action. They will forward the report to the Wildlife Department wh...

Found – Spitz Mix In TTDI 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
From Koo (below). Please help forward the link.
Dear Dr Chan,
I would appreciate it very much if you could publicise this lost dog case in your AnimalCare blog:
This male dog was found at about 6.30am on Saturday, 21 January 2012 in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur (TTDI). He was very tame, friendly and willingly came to me when I called him. He did not have any collar or dog tag and the vet couldn’t scan any microchip either. The vet has informed that the dog is unneutered, aged abou...

From:

Message:
H i there
Seven months ago my husband and I arrived in this wonderful city of
yours. We were so awestruck at the modernity and all the shopping
malls! We moved into a Guest House here in Taman Seputeh for a few
weeks, just to find our feet before we venture off into other Asian
countries. (We are still here)!
At the nearby commuter station (Seputeh), we found a young cat in a
bad shape. Her owner abandoned her on the nearby rubbish dump...

Life And Death Waits For No One – In Loving Memory Of Ah Wong (Hooi Bin’s) 23rd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
It may be Chinese New Year and many superstitious Chinese would go “choi! choi! choi!” at the mention of death, but not for us, because the New Year is just like any other day for us – Life goes on, and life and death waits for no one. If one’s time is up, one goes.
Hooi Bin wrote to me on Christmas Eve 2011. She had just rescued Ah Wong, a stray cat, off the streets two weeks back. Ah Wong looked like he had mange, but it turned out to be more serious than that.
Here is ...

Sponsor-A-Pet-Programme At PAWS 23rd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
I was sourcing a place for the dog that Mahesan wanted to rescue when PAWS’ manager told me about their Sponsor-a-Pet-Programme.
I think it is a really wonderful programme, especially for rescuers who have nowhere else to place their rescues. They can surrender the animal to PAWS and sponsor the animal for the rest of its life, subject to PAWS’ Sponsor-a-Pet-Programme policies.
This is how it works:
The true purpose of this programme is to give the animals a chance to live longer unt...

Sunsuper Dreams Updates!! (Kenyan Dream Is Down To 9th Place) 23rd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Dear Friends,
It is now 3.30pm. I’m not at home, but my friends have just alerted me that the Kenyan Dream has had its votes reduced to 208 (and now, it has risen to 218 in barely ten minutes). It has also dropped from 2nd place to 9th position.
Our votes also got reduced from 3232 to 3000. This means some of our supporters had probably voted twice or multiple times. We urge everyone to please play by the rules. Each person is to vote only ONCE and the best way to help us win is by forward...

A Message From James Blackwell (Sunsuper Dreams Contest) 23rd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
A reader brought to our attention that the prize for the Sunsuper Dreams Contest is actually only AUD5k and not AUD10k as earlier thought.
Here a clarification from James Blackwell himself, the person who nominated us:
Hi Dr Chan! i am writing to inform you that i have realized that the winning money for this month superdream is actually AUD5000 not AUD10000 that i initially thought it would be. As i read their “frequently asked questions ” section, it mentioned that the extra AUD500...
