An Eco-Friendly Insect Repellent – Doesn’t Kill, Just Repels 6th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
This morning, I was introduced to an eco-friendly insect repellent. I was actually looking at vegetable seeds as I wanted to plant some vegetables for my home use. So, this person who manages a farm explained all about planting vegetables to me and how they control pests in their organic farm.
They use this:
He specifically told me this is just a repellent and it does NOT kill any insects. It just repels them. Excellent, just what I was looking for as my new house seems to have a housefly col...

Updates On The Shah Alam Cat Family (Koo’s/Maslinda’s) 6th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
Koo helped us deliver the RC Babycat to Maslinda for the kittens today, and he insisted on reimbursing us for the food. Thanks, Koo.
Updates from Koo:
Hi Dr Chan,
Please find attached a picture of the bank-in slip and the Shah Alam cat family.
I could only bank-in RM100 because the deposit machine doesn’t take RM1 notes.
The attached picture of the family was the only clear one I managed to take because it was the only time I used the camera flash.
The kittens are doing fantastic especia...

So, if you are a classical music buff, would you like to attend and at the same time, donate to the appointed charities? Admission is by donation at RM30.
They are giving me two tickets, so I’ll be there!

Shalyn’s Rescued Kitten – A Video Update 6th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
Shalyn sent this:
Hi Dr. CKY,
A friend of mine took a video of the kitten. I thought you might like to see the kitten in action
Her left side is actually weak, and she is uncoordinated. Those would be the main reasons why she lies on her side and tries to scrabble around. But she does try very hard to sit and stand (with some support) and manage to take a few steps before falling over (it’s like watching a baby take its first few steps!)
As of today, we’ve managed to get her to eat...

From Our Food Fund… 6th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
Two packs of 20kg Lasso dogfood for Mr Low, who feeds many abandoned strays on a barren piece of land in North Port. We are also waiting to help get some of the dogs spayed-neutered. Have pledged our subsidy for it.
One packet of 4kg Royal Canin BabyCat for the Shah Alam cat-family (one mother-cat and 3 kittens) currently looked after by Maslinda. Koo helped send the catfood this evening. Many thanks!
UPDATES: Koo insisted on paying for this food, so he has reimbursed us. Thanks, Koo.

URGENT: Fosterer Needed For 4 Abandoned Kittens (Kim’s) 6th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
FOSTERER FOUND!!
Kim (hp removed as per request after fosterer found) called me a few minutes ago. She stumbled upon a box with 4 kittens abandoned near a vet’s clinic and has no experience in looking after them. I shared with Kim what she could do, but she is worried as she would be travelling and does not feel up to the task.
She has called shelters and they said the kittens will be put down if she surrenders them.
She has also called a fosterer, but this fosterer’s charges are to...

828….anyone Interested? 6th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
At the Ang Paw Furrez, we collected a total (donations plus proceeds from sales of tshirts, cookies, cakes and Misai Kucing) of RM568 for Meiji.
There were some leftover cookies, so now it’s all sold off, so the total increased to RM628.
Then, Linda Labrooy donated another RM200 to Meiji’s dogfood fund, making it a grand total of RM828 (an auspicious number, folks…I shall say no more!).
Linda also gave a RM50 ang pow to Meiji for her personal use.
We will be purchasing dogfood ...

And Where Does Everyone Sleep? 6th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
For the cats on the homefront, one’s sleeping place changes with the hierarchy in the colony.
Normally, Indy sleeps on my table, right next to me, but today, Cow took his place.
Indy gets pushed back a little.
This bungalow box was supposed to be for Tabs, but Bunny made a barter-trade with little Tabs….
Bunny owns this apartment block, but since he is too lazy to jump to the 3rd and 4th floors, he has given up ownership to Tabs (oh wow…little Tabs owns the apartmen...

A Heartwarming Fish Story 5th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
I seldom write about fish because we don’t deal with the fish in the oceans nor those in people’s aquariums, but today, my friend, Kon, shared a very touching fish story with me.
Kon’s mechanic keeps fish in an aquarium. At the same time, this mechanic looks after his aged mother who had had a stroke. On the day his mother passed away, one of his fish too had a stroke.
Never heard of fish having a stroke, eh?
Well, never have I, but apparently, the fish did, because it kind of ...

Surviving Snakebite Against All The Odds… 5th Feb 2012, by Dr Rayya's Online Veterinary Journal
What a fascinating week it has been… It hasn’t been as busy which is really nice for a change.
We all took advantage of the situation and turned it into BRING YOUR PETS TO WORK week.
Here are Licorice & Kay, owned by Karen (one of our vet nurses)
I had discovered a lump growing on my own dog’s stump.
Poor Shepo. He had been licking his stump excessively and not allowing me to fully assess it. He loves to shake his stump so I thought he must have knocked it on something....

Sad Reflections On The Untimely Demise Of The Loyal Dog In Penang 5th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
Ref: http://myanimalcare.org/2012/02/05/sad-end-t o-two-loyal-dogs-in-penang/
So previously, 2 dogs were euthanised in Penang because they attacked a tourist in the course of doing their duty in protecting their territory. Never mind what they were doing, never mind intention, they killed a man, so they were sentenced to death for it. They were dogs. They had no chance to speak up for themselves. Sounds like plain old bullying of the defenseless, if you ask me.

Subsidy For Pelvic-Fractured Cat (Doreen Yam’s) 5th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
Sometime last year, our vet told me about this one case of a rescued cat from a factory, possibly needing a diaphragmatic hernia surgery. Our vet asked if we had the funds to help out.
I said I would need to speak with the rescuer and yes, we can contribute a subsidy.
I visited the cat once at the clinic, and the vet said he preferred to observe the cat for a little while more before going in for the surgery.
I did not hear from the rescuer at all….until last week when I found a subsidy fo...

After 16 Years….are You STILL A Fan Of Calvin & Hobbes? 5th Feb 2012, by AnimalCare
Allow me this indulgence, my friends, on a Sunday morning.
I am a great fan of Calvin & Hobbes. I love Calvin, I love Susie and I love Hobbes!! The comic strip by Bill Watterson is so philosophical and full of truths, but told in a simple and humorous way. I love that style!
And, I have ALL the books, too. Some torn and tattered after years of reading!
Did you know Bill Watterson decided to hang up his paintbrushes and retire on 31st Dec 1995 and the last C&H comic strip was published?...
