Pilling Ginger
16th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

It was 9pm, time to feed Ginger his next dose of antibiotics. It’s always been a nightmare feeding any pill or liquid medicine to my brood of 7, so I braced myself for the task. What more when Ginger is a community cat and not even my pet. So I armed myself with a toweling floor mat (it’s thicker than a towel), a can of wetfood (Natural Balance Ultra Premium), cut open the foil containing the dratted pill (thank goodness it’s quite small), drank a glass of water and took a deep...

Don’t Mess With Cleo (a Story Of Feline Hierarchy)
16th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

With 7 cats, there is often room for change in the feline hierarchical ladder in my brood. Currently, it goes like this: Tabs bullies the outside cats. Bunny bullies Tabs. Cow bullies Bunny. Indy bullies Cow (yes…this is something new which started recently).  An Indy-Cow confrontation.  Note Cow’s lowered ears? For now, nobody bullies Indy. I think it’s because nobody can quite figure out Indy. Tiger stands neutral. Nobody bullies Pole. Cleo is afraid of Pole and only...

Diatomaceous Earth For The Inside Brood
16th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

Today, I decided I’d rub the diatomaceous earth on the inside brood. No one seemed to mind it. After all, it’s just a massage on the fur…  I even managed to do Pole… …and Cleo!  But someone was SO interested to get more of it!  Me, me, me….I want some more!!  Me!!  Me, please! Me!!  This one? Er…later.

Ginger Day 7….another One More Week….*sigh*
16th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

Last night, I noticed another wound on Ginger’s underside.  Now, how did I miss this the other day? (This photo was taken after application of iodine on it)  I had been rubbing the Diatomaceous Earth on his fur but I did not notice this wound on his underside.  The flesh around it was hard.  Could this be a new wound inflicted on the Thursday that he had escaped for 4-5 hours? We’ll never know. Luckily he had been on antibiotics since Monday.     I know how to us...

A New Escape Artist In The Making?
16th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

Who?  This was taken a few weeks back…  The “training sessions” started then.  Yes! Ding, Ding, Ding!  Then, sometime last week…  A midnight attempt was made. But that was as far as Tabs got.  But when Pole tries…that spells trouble and action MUST be taken.  So, action was taken yesterday…and it’s about time too as it’s been a year now and the netting had started to wear out.  There…done!  And Mr Quack came by. He makes thi...

Next Step, Animal Abolitionism
16th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

Food for thought, from the VSS e-newsletter, 16th Dec 2012: Next Step, Animal Abolitionism How should we treat non-human animals? Is it enough not to cause them harm? In this episode of Philosophy Bites, Gary Francione, Distinguished Professor of Law at Rutgers School of Law-Newark, argues that we need to go one step further than Jeremy Bentham did and abolish all use of animals. He calls his approach abolitionism. Listen to his podcast: http://llnw.libsyn.com/p/8/5/c/85cd9a0d5 8eb12e6/Gary_Fra...

And There Are Still Many Good Humans Around…
16th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

In my communication with animal rescuers, I noticed a trend in some of them. Some (not all, just some) have totally lost faith in humanity and some think the worst of humans. Well, here’s something shared by Bernice, all the way from Australia, to restore our faith in humanity. Enjoy these 21 pictures: http://www.buzzfeed.com/expresident/pic tures-that-will-restore-your-faith-in-humanity So, if you think you might be becoming a human-hater, halt…put on the brakes, take a look at the...

Ginger Out On A (short) Leash (no Escape!) And Quack Visits
15th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

There was an alert at the pantry last night, and this time, it was Tabs who raised the alarm.  It’s the Quack lurking on the ledge!  Looks like only the tabbies were able to detect the scent this time.  Yes, Mr Quack?  The rest soon saw him on the ledge.  Do not react…and he might go away. That is how we avoid fights. You know what, Pole, you may be right…  This morning, Ginger was making a racket after breakfast…so I put the harness on him, but this time, ...

Ginger’s 3rd Antibiotic Jab
14th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

After (the failed) Operasi Quack, Connie drove Ginger and me to the clinic for Ginger’s 3rd (and last…yay!!) antibiotic jab.  Ray Ray and Don Don keeping Ginger company while we waited for our turn. The vet was pleased with the healing, but advised that one more jab would be better since there was still a wee bit of pus in the wound. I had placed some catnip leaves in the carrier, but it did nothing to Ginger. Absolutely nothing at all. We went home after the jab and a deworming t...

Operasi Quack – Plan A
14th Dec 2012, by AnimalCare

Connie came over this morning with a plan to catch the Quack. Here’s the plan from Connie: My master plan : 1.Go get some silvervine (sillylupie hasn’t replied me) 2. Bring cat food (I got, sometimes neighbour go holiday, their cat kena left behind so I feed their cat) 3. Get a big card board box. Make holes. Sprinkle lots of silvervine inside.
