Heidi’s Taiqi
1st Sep 2013, by AnimalCare

Every morning starts with the taiqi master (Dame Heidi) and the student crossing the road over to the basketball court. “Dame” she may be, but she jumps up onto the playground with no problems at all. The master locates a suitable spot and instructs the student to do his lesson there.  The master watches closely as the student does his warm-up. Today, I am given the privilege of watching a lesson in session. “We have press coverage today”, the master tells the stud...

MAN USED KNIFE TO CUT BLUE HERON FREE Report by Greg Goodmacher of California www.HarmonyFund.org I noticed a great blue heron on the other side of the river while I was cutting bread and cheese for sandwiches. Even though we were less than fifteen yards apart, the still bird did not seem concerned by the presence of my wife and I. We had found a perfect spot along California’s Russian River for a lunchtime picnic, and the presence of this large, beautiful bird increased our enjoyment. Wanti...

The Sunny Cats!! (from Rozita Halim)
31st Aug 2013, by AnimalCare

If you’ve been following this blog, you might remember the Sunny Kittens! They were rescued by a student when they were left in a box by the roadside in KL. The kittens were brought to me and we (meaning Bobby, all the cats and me) fostered them until they were ready for adoption. I called them the Sunny Kittens because they were such a joyful lot and every day, there would be a new adventure for them. They were especially close to Uncle Bobby. Here’s strolling down memory lane to 20...

Portrait Time!
31st Aug 2013, by AnimalCare

These are the first few photos taken with my new camera. Why new? You won’t believe this, but after my camera was repaired (and it was working fine), I was told my battery had warped so badly that I cannot use it anymore or it would leak anytime and destroy my whole camera. So I had to go buy a new battery. But because this brand is only popular in Japan and not in Malaysia, the shops did not carry the battery for this model anymore. We must have gone to no less than 8 shops in Suba...

This week's at ACRES Laos Wildlife Sanctuary, the rescue of 28 Elephant Trunk Snakes! 28 Elephant Trunk Snakes were being illegally smuggled from Thailand to Laos, likely destined to become someone's dinner or to be kept as illegal pets. Thankfully, the Laos government officials confiscated them at the Lao-Thailand border and contacted ACRES Lao PDR. Unfortunately, we are unable to release them back into the wild here as they are non-native to Laos. Being aquatic snakes, most were suffering fro...

3 Furkids Went For A Vet Visit
31st Aug 2013, by Second Chance

Our volunteer Pauline with Johnny and IreneIrene was brought in for her eye and skin check up. Both her eyes were getting opaque and she might lose her vision in time to come. This is most likely a born problem. Meanwhile some eye ointment can help slow down the vision loss process. Fido has a swelling in the chest area, the vet drew some liquid from the chest to examine. Vet confirms there is no infection and could be harmless if the swelling does not grow bigger. Fido was a little...

Welcome To Heidi’s Playground!
31st Aug 2013, by AnimalCare

We’ve got it all figured out now. Failing to get a place in the patio and kitchen, Heidi has now declared that the playground is hers. Yes, the entire playground. All of it. And when you step into the playground, Heidi runs from “miles away” and greets you warmly and joyfully. She is an exemplary host. The best I’ve seen. And if you wish to use Heidi’s basketball court for a good reason (like exercise), she not only allows you to (rent free) but she even accompanie...

Oh No! WHO Bit This Hole?
31st Aug 2013, by AnimalCare

I was about to go to work yesterday morning when I saw Daffodil (yes, Daffodil!) mooching around the two bags of Equilibrio in the kitchen. We are staying in an old house, so the storerooms were built really small at that time. I have no place to store the catfood so it would have to be in the kitchen. It is rare for Daffodil to be so brave and so near any human, so I went to have a look. She didn’t even budge as I approached. Then I saw it…some had bitten a hole in one of the bags a...
