Medical Subsidy For 2 Parvo Cats (Pat Ong Swee Kim’s)
22nd Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

We have subsidised 50% for both bills, ie. RM132.50 for Peanut and RM209 for Mothercat. As per our policy, we subsidised the hospitalisation but not the boarding. This subsidy comes from all donors through our Medical Fund (RM141.50) and Berjaya Cares (RM200). We wish Peanut a happy life in his new existence. From: Pat Ong Date: Wed, Jul 17, 2013 at 7:10 AM Subject: Request for medical subsidy To: “Dr. Chan” <chankahyein@gmail.com> Good morning Dr. Chan,

Heidi’s Check Up At The Vet’s
22nd Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

Now, Heidi’s story is…quite unexpected. Before I spill the beans, here’s what I thought: 1. Heidi is a young cat. 2. Heidi is pregnant. 3. Heidi is super friendly and manja to all humans. Wrong, wrong….on the first two counts, and can also be wrong on the third count! 1. Heidi is NOT a young cat. She has lost so many teeth, actually, and it’s probably due to bad gums. Many of her molars and premolars are gone. This explains why she cannot eat kibbles. The vet estima...

A shih-tzu was picked up and brought to the shelter on 19th July. She was found wandering near Caltex Petrol Station in Jalan Air Itam. We believed she may be abandoned by her owner. Her fur was all matted up and she was tick infested. She also has eczema on the neck area as can be seen. Another female shih-tzu (photo) was picked up this morning from Taman Gottlieb. If you do know of anyone who has lost their shih tzus, kindly alert SPCA at 2816559/0164166559. Your help to reunite th...

Willy’s Check Up At The Vet’s
22nd Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

I brought both the carrier into the vet’s examination room, and let Willy out first. He was SO frightened, he ran helter-skelter, jumped onto the side table and almost brought the microscope down. The vet caught him by the scruff of his neck and put him on the table. Willy has been scratching his ear. A bit of an ear mite problem, but not bad enough to warrant any treatment. Sometimes, they just live with it. Look at that pool of urine. Now, this is not normal. The vet pressed his bladde...

Taking Willy And Heidi To The Vet’s
22nd Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

Heidi came this morning and headed straight to the kitchen. She learns incredibly fast. Didn’t want Natural Balance. Only wants Monge. Very hungry again. It wasn’t a problem catching her and putting her into the carrier. Willy also wasn’t a problem too, but that’s because he was already in the cage. Heidi was comfortable in the carrier throughout the ride to the vet’s, which took only 3 Platters’ song. By the time we reached the third song, midway, she ha...

Urge China To Outlaw The Dog And Cat Meat Trade

Coincidentally, this came on Meatless Monday: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction /309/277/219/?taf_id=9350209&cid=fb_na As we’ve always said, not only dog and cat meat, other meats too. Let’s do our part and go meatless at least once a week, please.

A Case Of Mail Dumping By 3 Postmen
22nd Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

A reader alerted us to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne4Pvg3smRw# at=35 In view of the above, which we hope is only an isolated case, we strongly advise all applicants to keep a photocopy of all receipts, just in case. If you post by ordinary mail, it should arrive (during non-festive seasons) in 5 days. If after 7 days, you do not receive an email from us advising you on the subsidy payment, please email us to enquire if your form has been received. If it still hasn’t arrived, ple...

It’s Meatless Monday Again!
22nd Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

I’m reeling from the thought of Sonny and Lek-Lek being still missing and that some workers around Imm’s Shelter eat dogs. I hope and pray Sonny & Lek-Lek can be found soon. I know how the mere thought of people eating dogs (or cats) sends shivers down our spine. But we must remember that eating dogs and cats is no different from eating chickens, pigs, goats, cows, rabbit, fish, etc. All animals have feelings and consciousness; they are sentient. They can feel pain and experience...

Dogs don't naturally enjoy being handled in certain ways, e.g. nail trims and ear cleaning. However, we can make things easier by helping them grow accustomed to being groomed. The first step of the learning process is always for your dog to form a positive and rewarding association with what it's not instinctively comfortable with. Read http://www.cheerfuldogs.com/Documents/CheerfulDogs PositiveCERPuttingGoodIntoBad.pdf to find out more on how to put the "good" into something "bad". The art...

Sir David Attenborough Says Humans Need To Stop Breeding
21st Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

Here’s what the renowned naturalist says: http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/01/22/ david-attenborough-radio-times-interview-populatio n_n_2524315.html An excerpt: David Attenborough has described humans as a “plague on Earth” that need to slow down breeding to stop the world’s population being reduced by more brutal means. The Case Of A Negligent Owner (a Sharing By Dr Veeranoot Nissapatorn)
21st Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

Dr Veeranoot called me more than a week ago, asking if we could get someone to help rescue a dog from the street. I gave her a number of an organisation that does rescue work. Unfortunately, no one picked up the call. Apart from this, I do not know of any other organisation or individual who would allow their numbers to be given out. We’ve had bad experience before where requesters dump the animals on the rescuer or rescue group and do not take responsibility after that. A “rescuer&#...

Dinner For All
21st Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

Vincent eats with Mr G. Mr Zurik with Daffodil’s family and Timmy. Today, for the first time, Willy attempted to come out of the cage. Just one or two more days, Willy. We’ve come this far already. The vet said to bring him back for a check up tomorrow or Tuesday. If his scrotum is fully healed, we can get him neutered. If not, we’ll see if he can be vaccinated yet. Either way, I need to catch him again because I don’t think I would want to cage him for another 2 weeks...

A Primal Treat For Everyone
21st Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

Since the Primal Freeze-Dried stock has not arrived yet, I’ve been storing this one pack as treats for everyone. Cleo LOVES, LOVES, LOVES it! Well yes, she loves raw food, so it’s no surprise that she would love Primal. It is BARF nuggets. That’s all you’re giving us? For some reason, Tabs didn’t want any today. But Tiger ate up his share today. Previously, he didn’t want any too. What the inside gets, the outside gets too.  Mr G liked it too! I̵...

A Peaceful Sunday
21st Jul 2013, by AnimalCare

For once today, Mr Zurik did not make a fuss or “cari pasal” with Vincent. There was peace at the patio as everyone bad breakfast. The after-breakfast sojourn. There is peace. Heidi came much later in the morning. Last night, she stayed until midnight. This morning, she hung out at the basketball court to accompany my husband as he did his exercise. I’m inclined to think that Heidi has been abandoned. We had never seen her before prior to this and she is friendly to humans. ...
