ANIMAL SENTIENCE: WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO Why does ACRES exist? Why do we do what we do? It really comes down to one reason: the fact that animals are sentient beings. As well as feeling physical sensations such as pain, hunger and discomfort, plenty of evidence supports the notion that many of them experience a whole host of other feelings and emotions, including fear, happiness, grief and empathy, and many more. However, as humans continue to exploit animals in so many ways, the feelings ...

Why Cookie Comes Daily
13th Feb 2015, by AnimalCare

We did wonder why Cookie is so persistent in coming every day (sometimes several times a day) and trying to get in. Here’s probably why… Cookie: Hey there!! Good morning!! Are you the one they call Indy, leader of the Brotherhood of Indies? You must be the one! I want to join your brotherhood, please. Can I, please, please please? I’m black and white, see? I qualify, right?  Indy: No, you don’t have a mask. The Brotherhood is only for masked cats.  Cookie: But I̵...

We thank Q0010 for generously stepping forward to help us with our endeavours in animal welfare advocacy, being one of the latest donors to assist us with our efforts. (As the SPCA is a not-for-profit, community-based charity, and as we do not receive funding from the government, we rely on public donations and fundraising to assist with the operations of our animal shelter and clinic, support the work of our Inspectorate and animal rescue services, as well as other initiatives such as our fos...

SAVING BIG GIRL FROM THE DOG CATCHERS Big Girl was a homeless dog who simply has no idea how big she is. She was roaming through the neighborhoods of the city of Ilijas in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Big Girl was hungry, very hungry, but every time she approached a person for food, they would either chase her off or run the other way. Big Girl wagged her tail and had such hope with every person she tried to befriend, but the answer was always the same. “Go away!” Unfortunately, Big Girl’s luck...

Mongrel Puppies Sandy And Snowy Looking For Homes!
12th Feb 2015, by Noah's Ark CARES

Mongrel puppies – they are just as cute and innocent as other puppies, though not so lucky to be born as strays where they will have to fight for survival. There were a litter of six puppies found by a kind-hearted guy at a construction site at western Singapore early this month and he just did not have the heart to leave them there alone. The mother dog was strangely taken away to a shelter as told to him but we have no idea by who or to where, leaving the young ones alone to fend for the...

Pas De Dogue

Sandra Roth performed a freestyle dance with her dog Lizzy at the Open European Championships in Heelwork to Music and Freestyle, and they wowed the crowd. Their routine is simply beautiful – keep a close eye on Lizzy’s paws. She matches Sandra step for step! It's a joy, of course, to watch dogs and humans working and playing together in herding, frisbee, lure-coursing, tracking and agility competitions, but ballroom dance?! This really takes the... dog-biscuit. Dogs are wildly intelligen...

Tampered Receipts And Incomplete Forms Will Not Be Accepted
12th Feb 2015, by AnimalCare

Lately, we have received tampered receipts from applicants. It ranges from (1) adding details to the name because a nickname (or partial name) was written by the vet (we require full names on the receipt and it has to be the same as the bank account holder’s name), (2) cancelling someone else’s name and writing the applicant’s name over it (without the vet’s initial or clinic stamp), (3) using liquid paper to blank out someone else’s name and writing the applicant&#...

No, Zurik, No!!
12th Feb 2015, by AnimalCare

“Beri betis hendak paha” (“Give him an inch and he’ll take a mile”) rings absolutely true for Mr Zurik. And not only that, he will conquer the patio (and the house) and chase all the PatioCats away. And this is why it is of utmost importance that the Russian be kept at bay. So, we tried. We only feed him in the porch and we water-gun him if he comes into the house. But we seem to be losing control these few days. Look what happened just now… No, Zurik! Out, ...
