Kamakura Day 2d: The Streets Of Kamakura 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
We decided two temples would be enough for the day, so we visited the quaint little shops in this ancient town.
Plastic ninja ornaments!
This is a tiny little shop that sells all things cat.
Who can resist not buying something to take home from here, right?
Whenever we purchased any souvenir, no matter how small, the shopkeeper will thoughtfully pack the same number of little paper bags so that each gift will have its own paper bag. Then, all the gifts and bags are all put into a larger pape...

Kamakura Day 2c: The Kotokuin (Big Buddha) Temple 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
From the Hasedera (Great Kannon/Kuan Yin) Temple, we walked to the Kotokuin Temple where the famous Dai Butsu (Big Buddha) statue is.
This majestic bronze statue of Amida Buddha stands at about 43 feet tall.
Don’t forget to wash your hands before you enter!
The statue survived a tidal wave (tsunami) and an earthquake.
It is about 800 years old.
We went inside the statue (it’s hollow).
Since visitors could go inside, there are two windows on its back for ventilation.
Three Thai...

Kamakura Day 2b: The Hasedera Temple 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
This is the grand entrance into the Hasedera Great Kannon Temple.
Entrance is only 200Y per person (cheaper than the Neko Maru Cat Cafe!). Really, visiting these places is so reasonably priced.
Wash your hands before going in!
The path is peppered by the three-guardian figurines.
Photography of the statues (for worship) inside the shrines is not permitted, but the great Kannon (Kuan Yin) is absolutely majestic. It is 30 feet tall, plastered with gold leaves and if not mistaken, is at least ...

Kamakura Day 2a: The Trip Down By Train 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
The Kamakura trip was not exactly on our itinerary since the journey would take 1.5 hours one way, but since we already managed to cover all three Hachikos on Day One, we decided we’d spend one day at Kamakura instead of Tokyo city.
If possible, I did want to see the famous Dai Butsu (the Big Buddha) of Kamakura.
So, off we went again to the train station. Each time, before buying the ticket, we would check with the information counter for the fare. This way, we avoid having to use the Fa...

Tokyo Day 1f: Ueno Park 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
Ueno Park is one of the best tourist spots for the viewing of Sakura and we were lucky we stayed right there!
Look, there’s a black-and-white cat!!
Picnic under the sakura trees. They camp all day, overnight, and throughout the weekend!
There are museums and shrines within the park itself.
Before entering any shrine, temple or place of worship, there is a hand-washing place. The ritual of washing one’s hands is thus: Take the ladle with your left hand, scoop water, wash ri...

Tokyo Day 1e: The Neko Maru Cat Cafe 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
I had earlier googled, read reviews and the Neko Maru Cat Cafe seemed to be one of the best cat cafes in Tokyo.
By sheer luck, it was located just 6 minutes away from our hotel.
So we walked there after dinner. But we couldn’t find it until we stopped at another hotel and the staff googled for the address – it is located on the 8th floor of a nearby building.
Here we are!
It’s a small little apartment on the 8th floor.
Entrance is 600Y for 30 mins per person and you can drin...

Tokyo Day 1d: The Meiji Shrine 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
After visiting Hachiko at Shibuya, we took another train which led us to the Meiji Jingu or Meiji Shrine.
Located in the heart of the city, but once you enter, it is an entire forest!
Meiji Jingu Shrine is built in the traditional nagare-zukuri style with Japanese cypress. It is the largest Shinto shrine in Japan. By large, it is REALLY large, spanning over 175 acres. The evergreen forest consists of around 120,000 trees of 365 different species, donated by people from all regio...

Tokyo Day 1c: Hachiko At Shibuya Station 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
From the University of Tokyo, we walked back and we passed by the Hongo Sachome Station, which is the recommended stop if you were to take the trains to visit Hachiko and the Professor. But we walked all the way back to Ueno, feeling a sense of triumph that we found the correct gate (!) and the walk was certainly worth every step of it – finally, finally, finally, I got to see Hachiko and the Professor!
From Ueno, we took a train to Shibuya. I must confess guiltily that I don’t rea...

Tokyo Day 1b: Visiting Hachiko And The Professor 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
After visiting the real Hachiko at the museum, walking around Ueno Park and the temple, our next stop was Hachiko and the Professor at the University of Tokyo. This statue was unveiled on 8th March 2015, 80 years after the passing of Hachiko and it shows an excited and happy Hachiko greeting Professor Hidesaburo Ueno after work. The statue stands right outside at the Department of Agriculture, University of Tokyo, where the professor worked.

Tokyo Day 1a: Visiting The Real Hachiko 5th Apr 2016, by AnimalCare
It was news about the latest statue of Hachiko and the Professor that started it all.
Why not make a trip to Tokyo to see it for ourselves? And we haven’t been for any holiday for more than 12 years now, especially after getting the cats and starting AnimalCare.
So, after carefully planning, getting the tickets and leaving the cats in good hands under the children, off we went.
We arrived in Tokyo at almost midnight, on 1st April 2016. From Haneda airport, we took two trains to the APA H...

Pet Bereavement Days... In Some Places
The scheme is intended to help people grieving — but you have to live in a certain part of the world to take advantage. Pet bereavement days are fully-paid days to deal with the sadness and grief of a pet dying — in the US at least.
It comes following research that suggests 30% of pet owners surveyed felt grief and sadne...
