My late father used ‘putikaan’, a traditional method to determine the best time to go fishing, especially if he had to stay at sea for weeks. It was a dangerous affair with strong waves and winds, and unstable income due to dwindling fish stocks.
To me, being indigenous means living close to nature. As Bajau Ubian, we are very connected to the sea.
We are fishing communities, we build houses at coastal areas and we are born and raised by the seaside.

Elok pula ada kucing jiran mana entah yang tidur depan rumah. Kesian lapar. Tengok laici dia ranum and suara garau dan kuat. Ni mesti dia gatal nak cari betina lepas tu sesat. Comot sikit. Tu la suruh mandulkan tak mahu.
Ni dia dah kenyang dia terus mengiau, sambung kejar betina. Sigh.
Lambakan populasi lagi cepat dari tindakan pemandulan. Memang akan banyak lagi kucing terbiar dan anjing jalanan.
