Vincent-No-Tube 5th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
The morning started at 4.30am for us.
Vincent was still in his new nest, the cage in the patio. Luckily he allowed me to put in towels and did not reject them.
I fed everyone else at about 5.30am, then it was Vincent’s turn. Unfortunately, he showed absolutely no interest in the food offered. Raw meat – no. Canned food – no.
I didn’t want him to go hungry, so I decided to try forcefeeding the liquid food (Convalescence Support + Renal Dog). The Convalescence is supposed t...

Vincent Changes “nest”….and The Tube Came Off 4th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
This afternoon was our cleaning day and I told the part-time cleaner that she doesn’t have to clean Vincent’s bathroom as he was sleeping there. She did not. And I had already cleaned the whole bathroom whenever possible and also cleared out all the pails to make it more like a “room” for Vincent.
We had bought fresh chicken fillet, to try and entice Vincent to eat. The moment I opened the tray to clean the chicken, Vincent came out of the bathroom and came to the kitchen...

Vincent, Back From The Vet’s 4th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
I rushed back from work today, did Vincent’s subcut and off we went to the vet’s. I requested for a housecall, but the vet was packed today.
I drove slowly so that Vincent would be as comfortable as possible. He seemed okay in the car and was sitting on his tummy. A side story: I have a major car motion sickness problem. If anyone else drives me, I get car sick very easily. So when I drive any pet, I try my best to drive slowly, especially when making turns, over humps, on uneven roa...

Vincent’s Breakfast 4th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Last night, I was so sick, I went to bed at 9.00pm. I’ve been having his horrible sore throat and cough for 3 weeks now. It just wouldn’t go away. I know my throat is the weakest part of my body, it’s been like this since I was very young. Once infected, I need medicines and I take a long time to recover. Just my throat, elsewhere is okay.
I fed Vincent his dinner at 7pm. But before that, in the evening, there was a moment of hope when I thought he might want to eat on hi...

Taking Time To Listen To The Birds With Vincent 3rd Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
In the mornings, especially on weekends, we get a lot of birds in our area and their happy chirping fills the air.
I took Vincent out to the patio to listen to the birds.
My modified e-collar is working well. The drool on the plastic can be easily wiped off.
Tabs says hello to Vincent.
In fact, Tabs had been peeking in when I feed Vincent. She must be wondering what is going on.
Vincent wanted to go to the soil and I found out why – he wants to eat soil.
It’s the anaemia, I know. ...

Vincent’s Modified E-Collar 3rd Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
I modified Vincent’s soft e-collar, for his needs.
I sewed a piece of soft plastic on the area under the chin so that I can wipe off his drool without wetting the e-collar.
It works.
Meanwhile, Vincent is using the towel to urinate on.
The soft e-collar serves as a convenient pillow/cushion for him to sleep on.

Vincent’s Breakfast 3rd Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
I could barely sleep all night. I think I woke up every 15 mins. However, I decided not to come downstairs to check on Vincent because a cat’s sense of smell and hearing is so much sharper than ours, it will only wake him up and disturb his rest.
I finally got up at 4.30am and came downstairs. Vincent was up and sitting.
So relieved!
He had also defecated (a well-formed stool, darkish in colour) and urinated on the tshirt. Also urinated in his vertical litter box. It’s good tha...

Vincent’s Tube Feeding And Subcut For The Night 2nd Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Since all the medicines were given at the vet’s before we left, I only have to do the tube feeding and 200ml subcut tonight.
Vincent was clearly so happy to be home. After settling him in his downstairs bathroom (which is is current chosen “nest”), I went upstairs to take a bath. When I came down, Vincent was already on his way up to meet me.
Awww… He wanted to greet me when I came out of the bathroom.
Just an hour ago, at the clinic, his eyes were sunken and totally li...

Blanket No 211 (fundraising!) 2nd Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
In between, I managed to finish another blanket! This one was ordered by Ms Sharon Ooi for her mother and Ms Ooi has already banked in her kind donation of RM500 into our Fund!
Thank you so much, Ms Ooi!
Here is the finished blanket:
It’s made from 9 different blue fabric of squares and rectangles. It’s called the “disappearing 9 patch” and it’s one of my favourite designs (because I love squares!).
All our blankets measure approximately 60 in by 72 in (the Asian s...

Vincent Is Home Again 2nd Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
This morning, I waited by my phone. I know if I get a call from the clinic around 9.30am, it cannot be any good news.
Vincent looked pretty bad last night.
By 10am, there was no call, so that’s good. I drove to the clinic.
Upon my arrival, the vet said Vincent is still very lethargic and does not seem to respond to whatever that has been done. We know this is the last stage and we have done our best for him.
I went to see Vincent and yes, he looked VERY, very, very tired and miserabl...

Endangered Animals Sing “I Dreamed A Dream” 2nd Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
This is a very powerful message to the world but it contains very disturbing and heart-breaking (animated) graphics. To the weak-hearted, please do not watch. To those who want to be reminded that animal lovers are a minority who must speak up and act to stop beastly humans from their brutal and selfish slaughter of innocent animals, you might want to share it:

Vincent At The Clinic 1st Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
I reached the clinic before 5pm and brought home-steamed chicken with chicken soup, for Vincent.
Vincent was sleeping when I arrived. It is good that he can sleep and rest.
I spoke with the vet and Vincent had already been fed twice through the nasal tube. No vomiting so far. The vet will increase the amount of food gradually.
Well, it is good that at least there is food in the stomach now. Otherwise, the stomach acid will produce more gastric problems. And more discomfort.
I decided to wait un...

Vincent Has A Nasal Tube 1st Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Vincent’s condition deteriorated from yesterday. I managed to force-feed him 4 times, but as the day wore on, he looked more miserable.
When he first returned from the clinic, after the IV-drip, he was active, happy, alert and very interested in food. But yesterday, he took a downward turn.
This morning, he rejected the food I tried to force-feed. I finally managed to syringe-feed two tubes of Ciao liquid treats, which I pumped as far as in possible into his throat using a syringe. I did m...

“What I Eat” (by Carl Safina) 1st Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Here is a whole different perspective to eating compassionately: http://carlsafina.org/2016/0 4/07/what-i-eat/
Some quotes:
In nature, if a predator kills an animal for food, that prey animal got to be who it was supposed to be until the moment it was caught. By stark contrast, animals on modern farms seldom experience one single moment of life as they might have enjoyed it. On modern factory farms, are animals forced to live miserably before they die.
More thoughts:
If I catch a fish, the ...

The Wisdom Of Prof Carl Safina 1st Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
These are found from some of his many books:
“People in Japan and the Faeroe Islands kill dolphins and pilot whales by running steel rods into their spinal columns while they squeal in pain and terror and thrash in agony. (In Japan, it’s illegal to kill cows and pigs as painfully and inhumanely as they kill dolphins.) The lack of compassion for dolphins and whales indicates that humans’ “theory of mind” is incomplete. We have an empathy shortfall, a compassion defic...

Zurik’s Latest Plan (and Yes, Prof Carl Safina Is Absolutely Right) 1st Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
For a few days now, Zurik does not come for food in the mornings.
I think I know why.
This morning, Buddy was waiting as usual. So I gave Buddy his snack and looked for Zurik. Zurik was on the neighbour’s roof and he did not want to come down.
Smart, isn’t he?
He waits until Buddy goes away (and he gets a bird’s eye view from the roof, right?). Far away….
Then, he comes down and calls me at the window sill.
And this way, Zurik gets to eat in peace without the food-snatch...
