Kidney Diets For Cats (conventional Recommendation)
28th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

I am still researching kidney diets for cats and would highly appreciate any sharing from anyone who has achieved success with their kidney cats. Or, if you have done extensive research on such diets, please do share. Here are two articles which talk about what most conventional vets would recommend. After this post, I will share three other articles that recommend more holistic diets. From MedicAnimal: https://www.medicanimal.com/The- truth-about-renal-diets-for-cats/a/ART111494 From PetMD...

Feeding Time!!
28th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

For the Cow Clan. Indy’s appetite is still not very good. But Indy has always been a kibble-king. Sometimes, he will walk away from his food and all it takes would be a sprinkle of kibble onto the wetfood, and that does it – he will eat. However, he did not eat much today. He is supposed to be on ID for the diarrhoea. https://myanimalcare.org/wp-content/upl oads/2019/03/WhatsApp-Video-2019-03-28-at-05.23.19 .mp4 Cow and Bunny are eating to their hearts’ content! The two low-...

Oh Oh….Cow Took Off His Cow-Collar!
28th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

Last night, I was already worried that Cow might break out of his cow-collar. After all, when he was very little (maybe about 1-2 years old), he had a large fight wound on his flank. We took him to get it stitched up; it was done and he was put on the plastic e-collar. I would admit that at that time, I may not have fixed the e-collar properly. Cow broke out of the collar and bit all all the stitches and walked around nonchalantly with the open wound, skin flapping. It did not bother him at all....

Our Super Tahan Lasak Cow Mau
27th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

Cow had supper just now and I’m so glad his appetite is good despite the extraction and 3 stitches. Our truly super tahan lasak Cow Mau! So much has happened in these few days and I’ll need some time to consolidate everything so that we know how to go forward from here. Let me just summarise the important things here: Cow Mau – FIV+ but no kidney issues at the moment. Bad teeth extracted, scaling done, has the cleanest teeth in the clan now! Bunny – known FIV+. Has early...

Indy’s SDMA Test Results
27th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

So, I took Indy to the clinic. Everyone of our cats have already entered the geriatric stage now (7 years and above), so everyone needs a full bloodwork. I knew Indy has to be next because he has had many medical issues in the past. He also has a gum problem (with bad breath quite often), so I won’t be surprised if he already has medical issues. I bought a new carrier so that I could take Indy. A few minutes before we reached the clinic, it poured. Ah, bad timing. Luckily I had a raincoa...

Cow Is Home!! (with 2 Teeth Extracted)
27th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

Indy and I drove to the clinic and we reached before 4pm. It was raining heavily. Luckily I had a raincoat, but we parked a bit far, so by the time I got to the clinic, my sports shoes were soaking wet. Luckily Indy was the carrier, so he did not get wet at all. I will write about Indy’s examination in a later post. The vet assistant said Cow was already waking up! I was so relieved!!! Hi Cow!!!!  He was still a bit groggy. Two teeth were extracted – the confirmed very rotten ...

Waiting With Cow
27th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

Our appointment was at 11.30am. Luckily Jia-Wen hadn’t gone to work yet. It was quite difficult loading Cow into the carrier. He protested and clawed. It took two of us to load him in. The trip there started with mewing at a constant interval, but Cow soon settled down. The journey took about half an hour. Traffic was heavy in certain parts. Cow was placed in a cubicle after we arrived, but since he looked so scared, I decided I’d just hold him. Soon, it was time to put in the IV p...

The Cats’ Morning
27th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

I got up at 4.30am this morning so that I could feed Cow by 5am. That would give us more than 6 hours of fasting before his surgery this afternoon. Cow is back on my table now. And because of this, Indy cannot come in. This bench is mine, mine, mine. All mine!! Indy has to find a new place now that Cow has come back into the room permanently. Bunny LOVES his tunnel. Tabs, in the dining room. Ginger at the patio. Heidi, always the kitchen cat. Mr Zurik came to eat this morning. But Buddy ...

The Cow Clan After The Wall Came Down
26th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

Cow has been spending almost all his time in the room now. Tomorrow will be Cow’s tooth extraction and scaling. I’m a little nervous because of his age (being 13 years old). I hope it will go well. Your kind wishes are most appreciated. Once the rotten tooth is out and scaling done, at least we will minimise the chances of increasing globulin levels that might destroy the kidneys. Being FIV+ already causes an increase in the levels, so we don’t want gum and teeth problems to a...

About Stretch Therapy Again
26th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

This is a sharing about pains, aches and falls. As animal caregivers, we are sometimes susceptible to this too. About two weeks ago, Jia-Wen slipped and fell rather badly. Prior to that, he already had pain in his leg but he did not get it treated. The slip-and-fall was so bad, he could not walk. The pain was excruciating. He went to see a doctor who said it was stretched ligaments and tendons, and was prescribed the usual pain medicines. But the pain was still bad and because he could not walk,...

The “wall” Comes Down
25th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

This netting was put up a few days before Chinese New Year in 2018 (last year). At that time, my back was so painful until I could not bend even a little bit to wipe the floor anymore. Cow, Bunny and Indy were spraying nonstop and it was impossible to clean up the room. A hole was made for Pole and Cleo to come through (the girls don’t spray). Indy could scale (ala-Spider-Cat) the netting very easily, but he also learnt very quickly that he must not spray. Indy would come in several time...

Chicken Feet Broth For Bunny Bun Buns!
25th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

I cooked the chicken feet broth for more than 2 hours. It contained chicken feet, one chicken thigh and a few slices of pumpkin (the vet said Bunny might need some fibre to help him poop). I deboned the chicken feet and the thigh. Added some mashed pumpkin. I had earlier given Bunny a whole raw chicken foot, but he didn’t know what to do with it. Oooh….yums, yums… Care to share some, Bunny?   https://myanimalcare.org/wp-con tent/uploads/2019/03/WhatsApp-Video-201...

Bunny Pooped! And No Proteinurea!
25th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare

So, we went to the vet’s, Bunny and I. I handed over the urine and the vet ran the test while she examined Bunny. This is a different vet today (same clinic) so it’s also good to get her opinion. The vet palpated Bunny’s colon and said there are still stools inside, and Bunny is still constipated. She decided to give him an enema to get the stools out, but only after a 200ml subcut. The enema might cause loss of fluids, and the Lactulose actually draws water into the colon (to ...
