Bunny’s Sunday Subcut And The Switch-A-Lunch 31st Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
We did Bunny’s subcut just now. There were no problems except that before we started, Bunny sprayed onto the curtain…massively. His urine stank – glorious stinky pee! After knowing what kidney failure cats go through, I am very grateful for stinky pee.
Again, it wasn’t easy poking through his thick skin! How resilient is a cat – Bunny had no reaction to the poking. How thick is his skin? And I’m using the pink needle too.
Therapy Tabs came to help.

IronCat And The Clan 31st Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Today is the last day for Cow Mau’s antibiotics after his teeth extraction and scaling. Cow is so tough that I only gave him the Tramadol painkiller for 3 days. It was prescribed for a week, but I could see he was as comfortable as ever and it certainly looked like Cow felt no pain at all, so I didn’t think he needed it. The less chemicals, the better.
He also started eating on that same night (despite the stitches at the extraction site). But then again, so did Vincent for both his...

Breakfast, The Plonkables And The Unplonkables 30th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Back to many varieties, because we have the CKD diet and non-CKD diet. Actually, the only early-CKD cat now is Bunny. Indy and Ginger are borderline SDMA, but Indy has high creatinine. The SDMA may be a better indicator of CKD. Bunny’s SDMA reading is 18. Ginger and Indy’s are 15. The upper boundary for normal is 14. I’m hoping Ginger and Indy’s will go back to normal, and Bunny’s will go down. Bunny has NO proteinurea, so that’s reall...

Homecooked Food For Everyone! 29th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Since Ginger needs homecooked food, I decided to make a batch for everyone.
This is blended chicken meat and chicken liver with lots of chicken soup.
Since chicken alone is not balanced, this is my mixture of bone meal (for calcium), vitamin E powder and taurine. I have not added the vitamin B complex yet. I used to use nutritional yeast but that has phosphorus, so I cannot use that anymore now. I also added Ark Naturals’ fish oil.
Ginger and Heidi loved it!
Tabs didn’t want any....

We have provided an aid of RM120 for the neutering of these 2 cats.
We are making further enquiries about the one-eyed cat.
Dear Dr Chan,
Good morning,
It’s me again (Ms Tan Chok Yen). I have these 2 females cats that were found in my housing area at Taman Cheras Indah, Ampang, Kuala Lumpur. It’s been wandering around at my house area for almost a month. We began to feed them for weeks. We also decided to bring them to neutering. The black one is a challenge to catch...

Tabs, Heidi And Ginger’s Check-Up (again, Girl Power!) 29th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Today is Tabs, Heidi and Ginger’s turn.
This new carrier was meant for Tabs (as it’s bigger), but since Heidi had gone in to make it her home, we let her be and just closed the door. Tabs had to use the smaller one, but it was big enough.
Ginger was nervous and mewed all the way there, though just softly. He also urinated in the carrier just before we reached, so I informed the vet assistants and they collected his urine in case any urine test had to be done. The vet assistants then...

Fish Oil For Cats – A Comparison 29th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
A comparison between NatureMade (for humans) and Coatex (for pets):
Coatex has borage oil and its fish oils’ source is not specified. NatureMade’s fish oil comes from mackerel, anchovies, etc. The smaller fishes are supposed to be less toxic because they are lower on the food chain.
Borage oil is rather controversial. Some websites say it is very good for skin problems in pets, but some say it is highly toxic for cats!
Pro: Borage oil is good for cats because it is very rich in...

Everyone’s Breakfast 29th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
I started by mashing the chicken feet broth with my turbo chopper.
Heidi loves it. Ginger too, but not Tabs.
Fuss-pot Ginger is difficult to please. Today, the only thing he would eat was the chicken feet broth and rehydrated Primal. His taste is unpredictable. Maybe today’s check-up at the vet’s will shed some light on his appetite and constant vomiting.
If Ginger likes chicken feet broth, maybe he prefers homecooked meals. I’ll just have to add bone meal for the calcium pl...

De-Stressing Cleo….how? 28th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
We haven’t quite decided how to help Cleo de-stress yet….
When Tabs was living in Bunny’s Place, she was also stressed. We don’t know if she was just copying what Cleo did, but Tabs also had bald spots, similar to Cleo’s. Ever since Tabs moved out to the rest of the house, she’s obviously much happier and there has been no balding anymore.
Maybe we should let Cleo come out too?
The vet did suggest letting Cleo have high spaces where she would feel safer. She...

Officially Off-Collar For Cow! 28th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
I think it’s okay to let Cow be off the collar now. It’s been more than 24 hours already. And in any case, he already took it off last night and was probably off-collar for a few hours.
He was so happy and spent almost an hour grooming himself.

Sleeping restfully….after a huge supper!
I am very thankful that Cow’s rotten teeth have finally been extracted and now he has the cleanest teeth among all our...

Cow Power! 28th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
I tabulated the Cow Clan’s kidney readings:
Looks like Cow Mau has the lowest creatinine reading!!
Somehow, instinctively the vet didn’t think it was necessary to do the SDMA test on Cow Mau and she was right! The SDMA test is pretty costly….
Super Cow Mau!!!
And on top of that, he has the cleanest teeth in the clan now.

Pole And Cleo’s Check-Up – No Kidney Issues! 28th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Today was Pole and Cleo’s turn to go to the vet’s for their check-up.
Cleo was so extremely stressed, she mewed very loudly all the way in the car, at the clinic, and inside the consultation room! Pole was quiet.
Cleo’s obvious issue is the shedding at her flanks. This has been ongoing for 10 years now. No vet has been able to solve it, many say it’s due to stress, which is probably true as Cleo is a highly stressed cat.
The vet checked her fur in those parts and found th...

Bunny’s First Home Subcut 28th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
Jia-Wen helped me with Bunny’s first home subcut this morning.
I didn’t know what to expect, but I know Bunny is very strong, so it was wise to have someone help.
I used Vincent’s favourite minky cloth again, prepared the kit and brought Bunny up.
This time, I decided we’ll do it higher up and not at the flanks.
Pinched the skin, and poked….and poked….and poked….my goodness, Bunny’s skin is like some sort of leathery “hide”. It was S...

Kidney Diets For Cats (holistic Recommendations) 28th Mar 2019, by AnimalCare
When Vincent was diagnosed with last stage kidney failure in July 2018, I was also at a loss on what would be the best diet for him. Of course vets recommended the prescription diet, but here’s the thing: Vincent was a very strong-willed cat. There was no way I could force him to eat whatever he did not want.
So, I decided to respect Vincent’s food choices. Vincent chose raw food. It was also partly due to his terrible mouth ulcers where he could only eat raw chicken fillet and raw l...
