Updates On Ginger, The Cat With Mange 18th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
From Alex:Some updates on Ginger. She seemed to had gotten a better appetite today, eating a little bit more. Am feeding her 3 meals a day (like us humans) with some dry food in her bowl leftover for whenever she wants to eat. My friend suggested that I add some vegetable oil to her dry food so that it will be softer for her to eat, will get some wet food for her when I get the chance. The vet suggested that I apply baby oil to her ears right? Should I rub on other infected areas as well such as ...

This Is SO Cute!! 18th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
Do you remember Brownie? She had a fractured leg and surgery was done to repair it by inserting a pin to rejoin the two pieces of broken bones. It's been months since the surgery and she's doing fine now. Mary sent these photos:Brownie is the brown one, leading the way, and the black-and-white, according to Mary, is Brownie's best-friend and is always following the "queen". Apparently, the b&w missed Brownie when Brownie was hospitalised. Now, the queen and the lady-in...

Newborn Kittens For Adoption Later 18th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
Su Ann wrote to me sometime back asking for help for a kitten who was trapped in a drain. We tried and one of our volunteers went to the site itself but couldn't get into the drain. Subsequently, the kitten got out by herself or maybe the mother-cat got her out. The mother-cat was also quite fierce so it wasn't possible to catch her for spaying. Now, the the mother has given birth to another litter. It's only been 3 months - this is how fast unspayed free-roami...

Updates From Devakie (12 Dogs In Penang) 18th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
This morning, I was thinking about the 12 dogs in Penang whom Devakie is trying to save. These 12 dogs were left behind when their owners moved and the whole place is now being evacuated to make way for development. Devakie has been providing food for these dogs and wrote to me to ask for assistance on how to help these 12 dogs about two weeks back. I found a place in the Klang Valley that could take in these dogs, but the journey from Penang to here is rather far and it w...

A Burmese Village Trick 16th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
I was e-talking to my spiritual teacher (in Taiping) the other day and the subject of their temple cat came up.He told me that some of their previous cats tend to run away after sometime. There is a residential housing area nearby so perhaps some of the cats went to live there. Then, he said the only cat left at the temple now seems to be very homeloving and is not inclined to run away. Apparently, one of the Burmese workers said back in Bu...

Meeting Alex And Ginger 16th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
Alex came to collect the cat-carrier from me this morning and by afternoon, she had managed to get the cat with mange (whom she now calls "Ginger") into the carrier. Ginger is a stray who lives on Alex's road. I met them at the vet's.The mange is pretty bad. But no worries, it should heal in 3-4 weeks. If you remember, Zhou Zhou's case was much worse off than this.Ginger kept wanting to go into the carrier. The face and ears are quite bad.All caked up in the ears.Ginger is...

Mimi And Manja's Updates 16th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
Last night had been quite hectic and tiring for CP and her family. It's their first time handling the post-op care for two spayed females, Mimi and Manja. Apparently, Mimi is quite an escape artist. Despite reinforcing and fastening the cage with wires, she managed to squeeze out of the cage twice and that really caused a panic in the house. Finally, CP had to put the whole carrier (with Mimi) inside the cage. Mimi licking her wounds.Manja sitting up already.Mi...

A Kitten-S.O.S At Midnight 16th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
Yesterday evening, I was in Klang to give a public talk. I do not have blackberries or internet facilities on my phone, so I have no access to emails whenever I am not in front of a computer. When I reached home at almost 11pm, I found three emails from a young lady named Jess. Jess was desperately in need of a fosterer for a kitten she had just rescued. Here's her first email:Dear Dr.Chan,Just now (around 5.30pm) my car broke down & I had to take taxi to the car shop...

Help For A Cat With Mange 16th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
I received this request from Alex two days ago:Hello Dr Chan,A friend of mine recommended me to contact you for help with this issue. The cat in question is actually my neighbor's cat, when they moved in a couple years ago, the cat followed. She is orange, medium long haired and looked quite pretty with bushy tail back then. But now she looks worse than a stray cat, her tail is grey and looked like it had been ran over by cars several times or something. (just look, not sure if it really happene...

AnimalCare Is NOT A Shelter 16th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
I received an email yesterday, from someone who asked if I could give her advice on setting up a dog shelter. Apparently, she had heard that AnimalCare is a shelter. I'd like to clarify here that AnimalCare has never been and is still not an animal shelter. I also do not foresee us becoming a shelter in the future. I suppose with so many new people coming into the scene of animal welfare work, it might do well for me to clarify this from time to time. I thought our mission s...

Tina's Cat, Spayed 16th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
I received a call yesterday from a Mrs Tan who asked for help to spay one female cat. Apparently, there is a Malay lady by the name of Tina (or Lina, I couldn't quite hear properly on the phone) who is a cat-feeder. Tina has been feeding stray cats for many years and lately, she had been unwell. Mrs Tan wanted to help Tina get this particular female cat spayed, but she herself (Mrs Tan) is also a cat caregiver and has been stretched to the limit with her own cases. Mrs Ta...

Mimi And Manja Spayed 15th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
CP and her family did not have any prior experience in handling cats until....Mimi came into their lives. Mimi had given birth to a litter of 3 kittens in CP's house compound and thus started CP and her family's wonderful learning experience in looking after and caring for stray cats. Two weeks ago, CP brought the male cat, Didi, to be neutered at our panel vet under our sponsorship. CP's learning experience also included an S.O.S by another rescuer who needed help with two new...

A Heart-Warming Story - Amy, The Cat Rescuer 15th Apr 2011, by AnimalCare
My friend, Mary Yap, has been dropping in regularly these few weeks ever since our latest tshirts arrived. Mary is, by far, our No.1 tshirt-seller! She really goes all out to help us sell to friends and relatives, and I cannot thank her enough. First of all, Mary was also the one who got me Erin's (our designer) contact. So, no Mary, no tshirts. That says it all.Anyway, Mary was telling me about one of her neighbours by the name of Amy. Amy is a very kind-hear...
