Are You Wearing Dog Leather? 25th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
This is from PETA:Where does the leather for purses, shoes, and belts come from? Many of us may think that we know the answer but don't know what animal the skin was taken from — or how that animal suffered. The truth is quite disturbing. Undercover investigators have provided PETA with horrifying photographs of dogs in Thailand as they were being slaughtered so that their skins could be tanned for leather. The photographs show terrified dogs sitting in crowded cages, awaiting their own ...

Atrocious Delicacies In China 25th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
Whenever there is atrocious news about food, it always seems to come from China.A friend sent me photos (which I shall not reproduce here, because it took me two days before I dared look at the photos - you can probably google for them if you do a word search on "waxed dogs and cats in China").Yes, apparently, the Chinese in China capture dogs and cats, wax them and sell them as "delicacies" and the Chinese consumers eat them. The photos are....very heart-wrenching, more so, to dog- and cat- love...

The All-Elusive Herbie Was At The Neighbour's! 25th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
Aimy texted a few days ago to say she has finally spotted Herbie again - it looks like Herbie has chosen to live with her neighbour now. Herbie is this extremely spunky little kitten (estimated to be about 5 months old) whose rescuer/feeder had to give up for fostering/adoption because Herbie had made her place of work her "home". The boss wasn't too happy about a cat making herself at home at the office, so the feeder asked if I could find a fosterer/rehomer for Herbie. Aimy offered...

A Little Cat And His Caregiver's Perseverance 25th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
Mas Ayu shared this:Very recently, I had this experience concerning a one year-old male stray cat which I have been caring for since he was dumped as a very tiny kitten alongside with his brother early last year. They had both looked similar, both white and orange, so having run out of nice boy names temporarily, I had named the brother O/W No.1 and him O/W No.2.Early last week, I had noticed No.2 sleeping on a cardboard box in a corner, not his usual active self and he had not come rushing for ...

Dog With Two Crushed Legs 24th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
I was at our vet's this evening and overheard an emergency case they handled yesterday evening. Apparently, an owner had brought in her pet dog (not sure whether it's a Golden Retriever or Labrador, but it's one of those) with two crushed legs. The story goes (thus have I heard) that the owner came back and the automatic gate opened. The dog ran out. The owner gave chase but the dog was faster. By the time the owner came back to the house, the dog had returned on its own, but was blee...

For All Dwellers, Great And Small 24th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
From Mrs Wong:http://theage.domain.com.au/real-estate-news/ for-all-dwellers-great-and-small-20110819-1j0ox.ht mlAs backyards shrink and people work more hours, pets' needs are being factored into housing design. Some architects would think they were barking. But when Madge Alexandra's clients asked her to consider the needs of their dog and two cats when designing their new Northcote house, she was pleased.''Most people want a cat or dog flap in an outside door. But otherwise, it's not common to...

Dog Thefts On The Increase 24th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
Kar Ven shared this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-cana da-14637989What is the world coming to? And what would humans resort to next, all for the sake of raking in more money by victimising the weak and defenseless? You know how it is that we are usually about 30 years behind the West in "catching up" with what they do (which isn't necessary, really, but that's the way of the world due to colonisation).I can only hope that pet thefts will not develop into a crime here.

Rabbits In Need Of Rescue/help 24th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
Mun Ee (t_munee868@hotmail.com) has brought this to our attention: Just now i walked pass this pet store at Pandan Indah. I saw this man looking beside a trash bin. I looked at what he was looking at, to my horror, there were 3 rabbits in a cage. They have very very very bad skin disease and their legs were so weak that they couldn't move. The skin disease was so bad that they don't even look like rabbits. Attached are some pictures of the rabbits. We do not know if the petshop has thrown...

A Cat Family And Their New Owners (hopefully!) 24th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
Christine has been writing to me to ask about this stray mother-cat and her kittens who lives around her house. This is Christine's first time learning to care for cats and so I thought a trip to the vet's would be good. At the same time, the cats can go for a check-up, too, since one of the kittens have diarrhoea. So, Christine came to borrow my carrier yesterday, and she managed to catch all three (mother and the kittens) today. That's Christine in yellow and her daughter, Zoey. Zoey says...

More Information On Ginger 24th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
From Peggy, after the visit to the vet yesterday:As regards Ginger, the vet said by the look of the wound, it doesn't look anything like sporo or cryptocococcis. He said the wound is too clean to be it. He cut off all the dirty bits, and scraped a bit off the wound onto the slide, and look under the microscope. What th earlier vet did was, he pressed the slide on the wound, but I could see the slide was all smudge. Could the smudge be stuck with some fungus or spores, is it possible, I really do...

Giving Our Blessings To Dying Animals To Let Go 24th Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
KT Tan has this to share. I think it's really, really good. Thanks, KT.Grieve Not For Our Pets Who Have DepartedFor those of us who like animals... there is always the heartache when a dear one passes away due to illness, accident or old age. Sometimes we wonder whether a beloved sick pet should be kept alive as long as possible if there is no cure and not be put to sleep or should we put it to sleep to spare our beloved pet any further pain and suffering if there are any. And when o...

Ref: http://www.myanimalcare.org/2011/05/surgery-on-lil ac-cat-injured-in-car.htmlI have been resisting writing about Lilac for some time now, but I think now is the time to tell the whole story, because FINALLY, the owner has taken her back.Yes, FINALLY....after heaven knows how long.On 14th May, a cat rescuer called me to tell me a VERY long story about this cat, named Lilac, that was going to be put down because of a leg injury. Not Sporo Or Crypto, But Something Else.... 23rd Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
Peggy Tiong was eager to start Ginger on Itraconazole since our vet said Ginger had Cryptococcosis. So, I had already ordered the medicine from our other vet and it had arrived today. So, Peggy brought Ginger over to collect the medication. However, our other vet took a swab (by scraping) of the wound and upon examination under the microscope, he said there was no evidence of Sporo or Crypto. He said it appeared to be either an allergy or mast cell tumour (probably malignant). See this: ...

Only-One And Mum, Orange, At The Vet's 23rd Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
After Karuna's visit to the vet's, I went back home, grabbed my carrier and went off to fetch Wei Leng and June, with Only-One and her mum, Orange, in tow. By the way, Only-One is female. This is Wei Leng. Orange and Only-One are in the carrier. Orange is a lovely cat. We'll check Only-One first. Still a little thin, but the abdomen is quite bloated, probably due to over-eating, what with AD and mother's milk. She cannot be dewormed yet as it has not been one week since the l...

Snowy Day 6 23rd Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
Updates from Agnes:Snowy is certainly improving. The moment he saw me, he stood up, mewed a few times and then lied down, very relaxed. He has been eating very well from yesterday. He was given the RetroMAD once yesterday evening. The vet told me that another X-ray is necessary after Snowy is on the RetroMAD for a week as the fluid is likely to build up again. Before that, he will extract any fluid that is still remaining. He will continue to give the antibiotic and diuretic injections. He ...

Karuna Goes To The Vet's 23rd Aug 2011, by AnimalCare
My mum called this morning to say there were blood stains on where Karuna lies on the floor, so it's off to the vet's for Karuna today. She has wounds again, and this time, it's due to pressure on her body as a result of lying down too much. Her fur was shaven, and the wound cleaned with water. There was also already a layer of "air" between the skin and the flesh, and this skin would have to be cut. Karuna was muzzled and the vet proceeded to cut the skin off. Can't use any sedat...
