Jackie Is Admitted In UPM Vet Hospital (Catherina Tay's) 8th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
Catherina texted me this morning saying she was driving down from Melaka with Jackie. Jackie has Hemobart and four antibiotics prescribed by her vets have apparently been not effective. Jackie has just deteriorated throughout the entire month. At UPM, Catherina was advised to have cats ready for blood transfusion, so Cath went back to get her other two cats, Bunny and Elmo, as blood donors. Presently, Jackie, Bunny and Elmo are admitted in UPM, awaiting blood test results for J...

Indy And His Silvervine Twigs 8th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
Indy has been playing with his ultraman catnip pillow occasionally. As Bin (the maker of these toys: http://www.sillylupie.com/) explained, they don't play with it all the time. They have to "reset" before they go high over it again. This morning, he had a high moment with his silvervine twigs. The twigs, the ultraman catnip pillow and another sachet of dried catnip leaves are gifts from Joy E. Saga to Indy. Thanks, Joy! You can get your catnip toys from Bin of http://www.sil...

Pixie's Back! 7th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
Remember little Pixie? She (or he?) is someone's cat and Wii brought her home shortly after Vixey passed away. Pixie and Vixey look almost alike, ie. both are jet-black. But my colony (meaning Cow & Bunny) refused to play host to Pixie (name given by me), so she wasn't welcomed by them. I used to feed Pixie in the back alley. Well, sometime last week, I heard war cries in the back alley, so I went out to have a look. This is what I saw in the neighbour's backyard... &nb...

Did You Know There Were Floods In Cambodia Too? 7th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
I received this in a forwarded email: Floods in Cambodia did not receive the wide media coverage as Thailand. But I believe the devastation there could be worse given the poverty of the country, and the fact that the infrastructure there is already basic before the floods. Siem Reap was flooded 5 times in a month. "According to, H. E, Yim Vanda, first deputy director of national disaster management, the damages caused by the recent floods in Cambodia could be more than $5...

Rest In Peace, Brownie (Janice's Rescue) 7th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
A few hours ago, Janice called from Penang saying Brownie had been diagnosed as having distemper. Hence, the nasal discharge and the bloody poo. She needed advice on what to do. I asked if Brownie had gone to the twitching stage, and Janice said no.Of course, I offered whatever information I had, based on what I know and have experienced. We have nursed Sean and Tara out of distemper, both are adopted and doing well. We lost Wendy, but we gave her palliative care until she passed on peacefully.&...

More About Hemobart (Jackie's Case) 7th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
I've consulted our panel vet on the treatment for Hemobart. According to him, treatment is easy if the cat is not FIV or FeLV positive and is not resistant to Doxycycline.Catherina says Jackie is not FIV or FeLV positive, and has been given Clavamox, Amoxycycline, Marboflaxacine and another antibiotic. But Jackie has developed jaundice now, and has no appetite. I've conveyed what I've learnt to Catherina and I hope this information will be useful for her. We have also offered our medi...

Breakfast For Absolutely Lazy People (or, Breakfast For Dummies) 7th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
Today is a public holiday, so I'm off. The other three members of my human family are in professions where there are no public holidays (husband - airlines, son - airlines, daughter - hospital), so they are all at work and I'm home alone. Being the lazy cook that I am, it's going to power juicing all the way for me today....Here's my breakfast:Let's see...there's choy sum, green apple, broccoli, pumpkin, carrot, sweet potato, green papaya and a bottle of Yakult. Everything's organic except ...

Please Help The Animals In Thailand 7th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
Every little bit helps.I know the adage, "Charity begins at home" - yes, but it shouldn't stop there. The animals in Bangkok really, really need help now, and if we could spare a bit to help them, now is the time to extend this help and widen our circle of compassion to them. While it is correct that we must help ourselves first before helping others, it also takes an altruistic and selfless heart to share a bit of our last mouthful with those who are more needy than us. Not asking us to g...

Please Pray For Jackie (Catherina Tay's) - What Is Hemobart? 6th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
If you remember, Jackie is the little kitten who went into an abandoned shoplot in Melaka and we tried desperately to source for help to get her out. Finally, the owner came (after a few days), and Catherina managed to get Jackie out. We even went as far as getting the politicians to help because (unfortunately) humans laws do not apply to animals. They would break in to rescue a human child, but not an animal. Sometime last month, Catherina wrote to say Jackie fell ill. Cath has brought J...

Food For Thought On A Sunday Morning 6th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
This is an absolutely personal reflection and opinion, but I'd like to invite you for your thoughts on this.I know of many humans who indulge in the pleasures of eating. Eating is not only a past-time for them, but it's an indulgence. They LIVE TO EAT. They would drive kms far away just to savour a particular dish or taste. When they visit places, they MUST eat a particular dish that's a specialty in that place. Eating is a hobby for them. For some, it is an indulgence. I'...
