Shark’s Fin Goes Off Menu In Peninsula Hotels 2nd Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
Environmental groups are claiming a significant victory in the campaign to save the global shark population, after the Peninsula hotel group said it would stop serving shark fin dishes from January.
Peninsula, one of Asia’s most prestigious hotel chains, said on Monday it would no longer sell the dishes, considered a delicacy in Hong Kong and other parts of the region, “in recognition of the threat facing the global shark population and in line with the company’s sustainabili...

A Lovely Story 1st Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
Connie James shared this:
A True and lovely story
In 2003, police in Warwickshire, England opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, cowering dog. The dog had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty and malnourished, and had quite clearly been abused.
In an act of kindness, the police took the dog which was a female greyhound, to the Nuneaton Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary, which is run by a man named Geoff Grewcock, and known as a haven for abandoned, orphaned, or otherwise in ...

Don Don Is Not Well 1st Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
I went to the vet’s yesterday and was told Don Don is not well. The vet wasn’t in so I couldn’t ask what was wrong, but the assistant said it could be due to over-eating as he had been eating up other cats’ food.
Here’s Don Don, sitting quietly in the cage.
Get well soon, Don!
I suppose when you’re a clinic cat, you’d be susceptible to some of the diseases since the clinic is full of sick animals.

From Pauline Leong (pauline.leong@gmail.com or 012-3067411):
Blackie appeared on the streets, looking very lost and confused. She wandered around for about 2 weeks – in the sun and rain. The vet says that she’s healthy – has good set of teeth and free from disease. Has been dewormed & frontlined. Weighing about 18-19kg (medium-sized). She’s a low-maintenance dog, obedient, loving, quiet. Just needs to go to poo & pee in the morning & evening. She’s learn...

Bunny Goes To The Vet’s 30th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
So this afternoon, it was Bunny’s turn to go to the vet’s for his vaccination.
Rather than me talk, I’ll let Bunny tell his story…first-hand.
So there I was, resting comfortably on their clean clothes, minding my own business, when suddenly….Mum patted me on the head, said something (she always thinks I understand, but how on earth can I possibly understand, right?), and then, she carried me and stuffed me into the carrier!!
Hey, what’s going on and where am ...

No More Kitty-2 30th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
Today, the vet assistant told me that Kitty-2 did not make it. They all passed away one by one and even the vet was completely baffled and could not figure out what was wrong with them. They just kept having diarrhoea off and on.
That’s how dangerous diarrhoea is…and that is why we always recommend deworming as soon as the vet thinks it should be done. Deworming should be done by a vet, not by us, as it may be difficult for us to tell when the animal is ready to be dewormed.
May Kitt...

Sugar Is Doing Well (Eling Chan’s) 30th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
I met Eling at the vet’s today. Sugar is doing well and should be able to go home tomorrow evening. However, Eling has to go to work, so she will board Sugar until Monday (at her own cost as we do not cover extended boarding) and take her back then.
Eling says she was able to pat Sugar, too.
The vet assistant told us that Sugar is able to walk around already. Her urination and defecation is normal.

A “Blessing” On Wheels (must Read!) 30th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
When I was first faced with having to take care of and make the necessary arrangements for Sunshine Courage, I called a few friends for advice and moral support. As you know, we do not “take in” any animal; we can only work with rescuers by providing the medical aid and the animal is then returned to the rescuer.
But Sunshine Courage was discovered by a Malay lady, and she could not take her in. And to make matters worse, Sunshine was paralysed. So, I had to do the needful. I had no ...

Sweetie Is Adopted!! (Linda Suhaili’s) 30th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
Ref: http://myanimalcare.org/2011/11/24/photo-upd ates-of-sweetie-from-ipoh-linda-suhailis/
From Linda:
Hi Dr Chan,
Sweetie has been adopted yesterday. One of the vet’s assistant apparently fell in love with her and asked to keep her when I brought Sweetie in for check up. She seemed perfect for her as she was the one caring for Sweetie at the clinic anyhow. Btw, the bleeding in her pee was due to UTI and she is much better after taking the prescribed meds.
So, yesterday evening, we sent...

Did You Know Lantana Is A Toxic Plant? 30th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
I’m in the midst of getting my garden landscaped before moving and a friend recommended a nursery. For the cat-space at the back of the house, I’ve consulted vets, shelter friends and other friends who are more experienced to suggest what I should do.
One of the things suggested was to have flowering plants that would attract insects and butterflies so that the cats would have something interesting to look at.
The nursery suggested Lantana, which is a shrub with beautiful tiny flower...

A Female Cat Spayed (Prema’s) 29th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
Prema contacted me last week to request help to get a female cat spayed.
The procedure will be done today, at our panel vet, under our sponsorship.
This is the cat.
Updates at 6.30pm – the cat has been spayed. I’ve just checked in on her at the vet’s.
Waking up from the anaesthesia.
Apparently, all her kittens died after her delivery (poor thing) and she still has a lot of milk, actually. The vet assistant wanted to “borrow” the cat for a month to feed two orphane...

Sunshine And Her Bone 29th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
This morning, at 6.30am, I drove down to pass the Advocate to my friend for Sunshine.
It was too early, so I did not want to disturb them. Just left it in the postbox.
My friend sent these photos of Sunshine and her favourite toy, a bone.
Yum, yum…
Aww….shh….(she’s asleep).
Get up…start chewing again!

Blacky Is Adopted (Jessy Lian’s) 29th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
From Jessy:
Good news Dr.Chan, Blacky has been adopted! I went to visit her as usual around 5.30pm. The pet shop owner happily informed me that a kind couple & their son had adopted Blacky and they left just 5 min ago. I wish I was there in time to talk to them & hopefully can get their contacts, so that I could pay Blacky a visit some day. According to the pet shop owner, Blacky’s new adopter was a regular at her shop & they wanted to look for a companion for their cat.
I honest...

I Only Managed To Get Cow…. 29th Nov 2011, by AnimalCare
Cow has been very obedient lately, and it was no problem at all plonking him into the carrier. In fact, he even walked right in.
Bunny was sitting on the pillar at Mac’s place, but the back door was jammed. Sigh… I kept calling him in, and he just looked at me and gave me that “knowing” look, as though saying, “Yes? You talking to me?”.
I gave up after trying on the door for 10 minutes as Cow was waiting inside the carrier.
Saved by a jammed door!
So, Cow and ...
