Updates On Jenny And Perky (Mei Leng’s) 4th Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
Our friendship with Mei Leng started when she read about our Klang rescue way back in Dec 2009 where we had taken out 36 dogs from the Klang Dog Pound (due for euthanasia) and rehomed them in a farm in Bentong. At that time, we were able to do that because the farm in Bentong agreed to take them in provided we supplied food and provided we got a vet to certify the dogs were in good health.
Despite the check-up by two vets at the pound that morning, eight of the dogs were found to be ill after th...

It’s always nice to hear of happy endings….
Dear Dr. Chan,
Thousand apologies for the late reply. I was away and busy with the school programme.
We never thought you would post about Ru and Tigger immediately on your blog. Thank you so much.
I recieved a few e-mails from willing adoptees. But I always end up replying quite late and by the time I had replied their e-mails they...

Oh Deer, A Fauna Romeo & Juliet Story 4th Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
Source: http://www.malaysia-chronicle.com/index.p hp?option=com_k2&view=item&id=23933:oh-dee r-i-think-i-love-you&Itemid=4
As he was being dragged away from his lover, he became furious and banged on the fence separating them, trying to get close to her again.
She was equally desperate, and with all her efforts squeezed through the fence and rushed to him.
A sweet kiss followed.
No, this was not a passionate Romeo-and-Juliet love scene.
In fact, the couple is not even human. He is...

Updates On Sunshine Courage 4th Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
Today, I called my friend who is looking after Sunshine Courage and to cut a long story short, Sunshine is showing great promise and hope every day.
She is even sitting up now, and trying to get up and walk!
My friend is having some problems confining her and refraining her from walking because it is crucial in injuries of this sort that the animal (or even in humans) does not move too much. Any form of movement may aggravate the injury, slow down the recovery or worse, cause further damage.
So ...

Many years ago, I was the shelter director at PAWS of Lynnwood, Washington. This organization had a dog and cat shelter, an advocacy department and a wildlife clinic. We also rotated night and holiday rescue coverage for both domestic and wild critters who got into trouble outside of regular business hours.
One fall evening when I was on call, a...

Graham Hill: Why I Am A Weekday Vegetarian 4th Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
Kean-Joo shared this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7sKMj85hDw
Remember in my latest book, Do We Have a Choice?, I asked that you consider going vegetarian once a week? Well, Graham Hill takes it one step further and talks about how and why he decided to go vegetarian on weekdays.
Be a weekday vegetarian and on weekends, it’s your choice. He says by doing so, he already cuts down on 70% of his meat intake.
Do it for the animals, the environment, the earth and your health (yes, in thi...

Sugar Is Ready For Discharge (Eling Chan’s) 4th Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
I went to settle Sugar’s bill today. She was already fit for discharge on Thursday, but Eling had to board her till next week because she is away on work.
The total bill up to Thursday is RM816, and we have subsidised RM408 (which is 50%, as per our policy). The amputation itself did not cost very much; it is the FBC test, heartworm antigen test and multiple biochemistry tests requested by Eling that added up to the cost, and also the spaying (but it was discovered that Sugar had already...

Be It Ever So Humble… 3rd Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
…there’s no place like home.
Indy still plays with his ultraman pillow sometimes.
Nowadays, he is getting more confident. He’s in our bedroom every morning, together with Cleo. In fact, normally, all five of them would be either in the bedroom or just outside. Sometimes, Indy would ambush the rest (see photo above).
Pole seldom comes upstairs, though. But it’s been raining a lot, so she’s at home more often these days.
Pole is Cow & Bunny’s sister.
Ti...

So…how About Observing Veggie Friday Today? 2nd Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
A quote by the Roman Plutarch:
It is certainly not lions or wolves that we eat out of self-defense; on the contrary, we ignore these and slaughter harmless, tame creatures without stings or teeth to harm us.
For the sake of a little flesh we deprive them of sun, of light, of the duration of life to which they are entitled by birth and being.
If you declare that you are naturally designed for such a diet, then first kill for yourself what you want to eat.
Do...

Is Meat Tasty? 2nd Dec 2011, by AnimalCare
Source: VSS eNewsletter 1 Dec 2011
Many of your friends and family are confused, thinking people are omnivores, needing both meat and plants in their diet. We only appear to be omnivorous because we have the ability to “doctor up” meat with salt and sauces (barbecue, sweet and sour, marinara, etc.) sufficiently enough to make it palatable. Prove this for yourself. The next person you meet head-on who claims meat is “tasty,” stop him in his tracks and insist that he eat a ...
