Baby Alligator Found In Small Aquarium At Restaurant 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Nandhini sent me the photos below at midnight last night. Apparently, a restaurant in USJ is keeping a baby alligator (or crocodile) in a small aquarium. A quick check reveals that this species is protected and it may be breaking the law to keep this poor animal in a small aquarium.
Nandhini has called the Wildlife Crime Hotline at 019-3564194 but was told that this case belongs under the Tiger Alliance and they cannot take any action. They will forward the report to the Wildlife Department wh...

Found – Spitz Mix In TTDI 24th Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
From Koo (below). Please help forward the link.
Dear Dr Chan,
I would appreciate it very much if you could publicise this lost dog case in your AnimalCare blog:
This male dog was found at about 6.30am on Saturday, 21 January 2012 in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur (TTDI). He was very tame, friendly and willingly came to me when I called him. He did not have any collar or dog tag and the vet couldn’t scan any microchip either. The vet has informed that the dog is unneutered, aged abou...

From:

Message:
H i there
Seven months ago my husband and I arrived in this wonderful city of
yours. We were so awestruck at the modernity and all the shopping
malls! We moved into a Guest House here in Taman Seputeh for a few
weeks, just to find our feet before we venture off into other Asian
countries. (We are still here)!
At the nearby commuter station (Seputeh), we found a young cat in a
bad shape. Her owner abandoned her on the nearby rubbish dump...

Life And Death Waits For No One – In Loving Memory Of Ah Wong (Hooi Bin’s) 23rd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
It may be Chinese New Year and many superstitious Chinese would go “choi! choi! choi!” at the mention of death, but not for us, because the New Year is just like any other day for us – Life goes on, and life and death waits for no one. If one’s time is up, one goes.
Hooi Bin wrote to me on Christmas Eve 2011. She had just rescued Ah Wong, a stray cat, off the streets two weeks back. Ah Wong looked like he had mange, but it turned out to be more serious than that.
Here is ...

Sponsor-A-Pet-Programme At PAWS 23rd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
I was sourcing a place for the dog that Mahesan wanted to rescue when PAWS’ manager told me about their Sponsor-a-Pet-Programme.
I think it is a really wonderful programme, especially for rescuers who have nowhere else to place their rescues. They can surrender the animal to PAWS and sponsor the animal for the rest of its life, subject to PAWS’ Sponsor-a-Pet-Programme policies.
This is how it works:
The true purpose of this programme is to give the animals a chance to live longer unt...

Dear Friends,
It is now 3.30pm. I’m not at home, but my friends have just alerted me that the Kenyan Dream has had its votes reduced to 208 (and now, it has risen to 218 in barely ten minutes). It has also dropped from 2nd place to 9th position.
Our votes also got reduced from 3232 to 3000. This means some of our supporters had probably voted twice or multiple times. We urge everyone to please play by the rules. Each person is to vote only ONCE and the best way to help us win is by forward...

A Message From James Blackwell (Sunsuper Dreams Contest) 23rd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
A reader brought to our attention that the prize for the Sunsuper Dreams Contest is actually only AUD5k and not AUD10k as earlier thought.
Here a clarification from James Blackwell himself, the person who nominated us:
Hi Dr Chan! i am writing to inform you that i have realized that the winning money for this month superdream is actually AUD5000 not AUD10000 that i initially thought it would be. As i read their “frequently asked questions ” section, it mentioned that the extra AUD500...

This Is Connie James’ Furkid Family 22nd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
For the last few hours, I have been thinking about that poor little white dog now at the shelter, and all because the person who surrendered the dog doesn’t trust us enough to allow Connie James to adopt the dog. Connie has already agreed to her terms – that she will FOSTER the dog and return the dog to the rightful owner should we succeed in finding the owner, failing which Connie will adopt the dog. I have spoken to the SPCA’s chairperson and she said all they need is for the...

Dear all,
A reader has just alerted me that the bonus 5k grant is not for the winner with the highest no of votes, but for an Australian charity of their choice, in conjunction with Australia Day this month.
This is taken from the Sunsuper Q&A:
What is the bonus Australia Day Grant:
To celebrate Australia Day, for Round 11 Sunsuper will be awarding an extra grant to a dream of their choosing that benefits an Australian charity, organisation or cause. This decision will be at the sole discret...

Updates From Imm’s Shelter 22nd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Oei Phaik Imm runs an animal shelter in Tambun, Ipoh. On 4th March 2011, my friend, Judy Chua, wrote to seek help for Phaik Imm and all her animals. Imm (as she is known) was in dire financial straits, she herself was in extremely poor health to the point of collapse and was suffering from depression to the extent of wanting to totally give up on everything she had worked so hard for.

Flower And Coco Doing Better Today! (Anita Chen’s) 22nd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Good news from Anita this morning, folks! Keep those prayers and positive vibrations coming for Flower and Coco, please.
Brought Flower back last night. As of last night, she stopped vomiting. Gave RetroMAD1 at midnight, nothing came up, watched her sleep for more than an hour. There is a faint tint in her urine but she greeted me this morning, and walked around outside her cage. Will be taking her to vet at 10am.
Coco groomed herself this morning. Grooming is a good sign, right? She sought ...

Sponsorship For Karuna’s Medical Treatment (Uncle’s) 22nd Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Ref: http://myanimalcare.org/2011/12/26/karuna-ha s-a-new-foster-home/
Karuna was a rescued dog from a temple where the temple caretaker found her terribly wounded after being attacked by a pack of wild dogs. A temple devotee brought her to our (then) panel vet and we got her treated. Karuna is very old (estimated to be at least 12 years old) and upon recovery (not totally, though), she was brought back to the temple grounds. Unfortunately, the pack of wild dogs had easy access to the temple an...

Subsidy For Rescued Mother-Dog And Puppy (Jeannette Leong’s) 21st Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
Jeannette Leong wrote to me sometime ago regarding a mother-dog and her puppy:
Dear Kah Yein,
Mother and pup were living in an abandoned car park near a coffee-shop
in Kota Kemuning.
Mother was looking for food at the coffee-shop when I saw her and later
followed her to the carpark and found that she had a puppy.
Was feeding her regularly when one day I spotted a few male dogs hanging out
at the same place. I realised that she was about to go on heat again, that’s when I

Subsidy For Neutering Of 3 Male Cats (Dr Aniza Abdullah’s) 21st Jan 2012, by AnimalCare
We have subsidised the neutering of 3 male cats brought in by Dr Aniza Abdullah. Our subsidy isRm80 per male cat and since one of them is a cryptochid (charges would be higher), we have subsidised another RM35 for the procedure. Hence, our total subsidy is RM275.
From Dr Aniza:
Good day Dr Chan
